“Great little property”

The previous favourable reviews are accurate. The cottage is attached to the landlords house, where Rob and his family (including a large, I believe, Afghan dog) reside. The gardens and driveway are therefore shared. Despite this, you'd struggle to hear any noise being transmitted through the walls.

As previous reviewers have noted Rob's service is excellent, property clean and in the condition you'd expect, and cakes await your arrival.

Local services are good, with local pubs, and a supermarket about 1/4 mile away. That being said I can't say I was particularly enamoured with the village itself - it' would be best described as functional rather than pretty.

It is convenient for Cardiff, and if you bring a bike you can cycle into Cardiff using National Cycle Route 8 which is mainly flat and off road, and follows the river Taff to a large extent right past Cardiff Castle and into Cardiff Bay. You can also cycle in the opposite direct towards Brecon.

The wifi did splutter from time to time - but overall I would recommend this as a place to stay. One tip. As the reviewer Nicola C pointed out in June there is a bit of a challenge in reversing your car out - so either reverse in (there's plenty of room) - then leaving is easy, or park on the road.

Management Response
14 Jul 2014
Thank you for your review, we always appreciate receiving feedback good or bad from our guests. We feel on this occasion there are a number of points we need to respond to.

The property, as stated on the website, has its own private garden which is completely separate from the rest of the house and is gated to prevent any unwanted meetings with our dog Beryl, who is incidentally, a very gentle Newfoundland, and not an Afghan, She is rarely seen by guests unless they wish to meet her.

The village and our house is set at the foot of the beautiful Garth Mountain and within walking distance of the Taff Trail and Castell Coch. We feel that this makes it rather more than 'functional' and this comment is perhaps due to the reviewer only spending just one rainy night with us.

The Wi-fi usually works fine and we have had guests stay for several months, relying on an internet connection for their work with no complaints. That said, if we had been been informed there was an issue we would have addressed it immediately.

Thank you again for your positive comments regarding the service you received. We look forward to welcoming many more guests to our lovely village

“A good place to stay”
Reviewed July 5, 2014 for a stay in June 2014

We enjoyed our stay at Railway Cottage at the end of June. The weather was amazing, and it was lovely to be able to sit out in the sunshine in the small but perfectly formed garden. We found the cottage quite small but it had everything we needed. We appreciated the wine and the welsh cakes - my husband is still buying them now we've returned to North Yorkshire but they don't come up to Rob's standard! We took both the train and the bus into Cardiff - preferring the bus. It was good to be able to get the car off the road, but we found getting the car out a bit stressful as you can't see what might be coming over the bridge and there are sometimes gates to open and close as well. The village of Taffs Well is lovely and the small Co-op in the village had everything we needed as well as friendly and helpful staff. All in all, a good holiday in a pleasant cottage in a great location! Great value for money.

“Excellent value, very comfortable”
Reviewed May 28, 2014 for a stay in May 2014

This is a great little apartment and is excellent value for a place so close to Cardiff. You can be in the city centre by public transport in 30 minutes either by train or bus. Quite spacious for 2 people and we squeezed in friends from London over the weekend as well with the use of the sofa bed! A warm welcome from Rob and his Welsh cakes are the best I've eaten (and I have made something of a study of them during the week I've been in Wales!)

“Great value and great people”
Reviewed February 28, 2014 for a stay in February 2014

Rob and Jo couldn't have been nicer and more accommodating to us and our young son. The cottage is small but extremely well equipped and comfortable. Rob and Jo moved the bedroom furniture around to make room for a small child's bed and provided us with wine and homemade welsh cakes. The train line is close to the cottage, but not intrusive and it is only a short walk to the station.

It was so much better than a hotel and easy to access the surrounding area. It was perfect for our needs and I'd definitely recommend to others.

“Quaint, comfortable, convenient, charming”
Reviewed February 4, 2014 for a stay in October 2013

We travelled to Wales for the Rugby League World Cup and stayed in Railway Cottage. We watched the opening ceremony in Cardiff and travelled there by train - only a hop skip & a jump from our accommodation..
Lovely location, off road parking, close to transport, restaurants and pubs nearby, supermarket with all you need to fend for yourself.
Very clean and tidy, well set out, plenty of room, very comfortable.
Welsh cakes were AWESOME!
Richard and family were very helpful. Would highly recommend Railway Cottage.

“Loverly Week In Cardiff”
Reviewed January 4, 2014 for a stay in November 2013

We spent a great week in Railway Cottage, even the weather was very kind to us. The cottage is ideal as a base for exploring the area, with easy access to Cardiff by Rail, Bus and car, the only thing I would say is that public transport seems very expensive in Cardiff, the bus is twice the price of the train, although the train is a little further to walk.
The cottage is very cosy and homely, everything you could want is there, every kitchen gadget and tool is available. The cottage is warm, and even though you are attached to the owners house you have the ability to control the heating. WIFI is available if you ask Rob and he puts a booster in the cottage for you, which works perfectly. Did not try the food in the local pub as we could not get served as the rugby was on so it seems everything stops for this, on Robs recommendation we tried the curry house and this was excellent. The chippy was also good. I would definitely return to Railway Cottage.
