Smartly presented B&B walkable from the ferry and town centre. Our room was a very spacious double, with the softest dressing gowns I've ever had in any hotel. Wide range of breakfast options; portions on the smaller side but no problem when asking for more tea and toast.

We just had one night here before our island visits and would have liked to stay here again when we came back to Oban but they were booked up. It is a lovely house, very nicely furnished, with excellent quality bedding, and the hosts are charming and helpful. The breakfast was really good too. It's quietly situated but within a few minutes walk of the town centre.

We stayed in room 2,
On arrival, there was no one to greet us, which is fine, not expecting someone to be in all the time. Plus our email said 5pm check in, although we arrived earlier than expected. We left the car in the car park and went into town, There is a sign in the window advising check in times, on a Monday (our day of arrival) between 2pm and 2.30pm, then again 5.45pm and 7pm. This is also on their website. So we returned at 2, again there was no one there. We called the mobile number, and were told they weren't expecting us until much later and were out for the day. No problem, we went back into town, but why advertise check in times and not be there?
The house itself is a beautiful looking building, with a decent car park. It's a short walk up the hill from town.
Our room, on first inspection, appeared really lovely. Not so.
There is a small entrance hall to the room, the bathroom off there. There is no shower, which we were aware of, but a roll top bath with hand held shower. Not very practical, trying to aim it with soapy hands! Has certainly put me off having one at home...
The bedroom: The wallpaper does not look very professionally done, the general finish quite poor. The tv was tiny, and didn't work (we received five pounds discount), Extension cables everywhere. The bed was not the best - it was a cheap frame bed, with a cheap mattress which had a topper on. One of those colourful blue mattresses you'd expect to find in a caravan, not a luxury B and B. Very poor and uncomfortable. I suffered with back ache for a few days following which impacted on my holiday,
Breakfast was very nice, although the sausage is rather small!
The website boasts a warm welcome - eventually! A place of quality and relaxation - not really. A taste of luxury with all rooms decorated to a high specification - on the surface, but in our opinion, not true.
We could have forgiven all, if it wasn't for the bed. I did comment in the morning to be told it was a personal thing. We stayed in two further B and B's the following two nights, beds were amazing! I wonder if the owners had slept in it at all? We can happily recommend two further B and B's for them to compare.

It is always disappointing to read that a guest has not enjoyed their stay at our guest house. That is not what we aim for and we do try to make improvements wherever they are required. Our response with reviews is governed by 3 simple principles; recognise that the guest has taken time to tell you and others what they think, consider if the problem will reoccur and do what you can to remedy the problem and ONLY comment on factual matters not personal opinions. So on the factual points:

As Mike said when you spoke to him at breakfast, it is a shame that the bed did not suit your personal needs and made you uncomfortable. As we did not buy the bed/mattress we can't comment on the cost of it but we can tell you two things. Yes we have slept in it and had a restful untroubled night. When we moved in we made a point of sleeping in each of the rooms to check them out. Also in 4 years we have had 3 negative comments about that bed and 54 positive comments (we keep a record of comments for each room because it matters to know how each room is experienced). That is not to say that the 3 are wrong, simply that it is a personal thing. The comfort of a bed is subject to individual judgements. In your comment about our response to your discomfort it reads as if we made no more comment than "it's a personal thing". There was more to our exchange. Mike said he was sorry that it had spoiled your time with us and asked what type of bed/mattress you prefer or are used to (e.g. hard, soft etc). You replied that you 'preferred a nice mattress like the one at home' - which does sort of reinforce the point that what individuals require from mattresses is personal and individual. No one mattress will suit all people AND one individual's experience does not mean that a mattress is either good or bad.

Arrival times: All guests that day indicated arrival times at or after 5pm (yourselves included) and all other guests turned up after 6pm. We took a chance that you would arrive at your stated time of 5pm and took our little girl to the local beach. You took a chance and turned up early - believing that we would be in. On reflection we both miscalculated.

The TV problem turned out to be the aerial socket connector box outside the window. It malfunctioned and has been replaced. Not something we could have done anything about on a Bank Holiday Monday.

Since your stay we have looked at the decor/walls. The house is of course old (1875) and in the rooms where its lath and plaster walls are intact there are lumps and bumps and some areas where sunlight discolouration (the room is light cream emulsion) has started to show. Later this year we will be repainting this room to even out the colour shading.

Thank you again

Mike and Julie

Can thoroughly recommend Heatherfield House if you want an upmarket Guest House.
We had a beautiful room/suite with separate bathroom featuring a roll top bath and really nice Scottish toiletries.
Lovely comfy bed and quality linen.
Everywhere spotlessly clean and nicely decorated. Would suggest room would benefit a larger TV with better signal
Good breakfast and great choices
Lovely friendly hosts
Perfect location close to town

Heatherfield House is a spotlessly clean comfortable property situated just 5 mins walk from Oban waterfront and around 8-10 mins from the Train Station and the Mull Ferry. My room was a comfortable single with a private bathroom nearby. The breakfast menu is substantial and is freshly prepared in each case by Julie. Mike is front of house and is very attentive nothing is too much trouble.
Thank you Mike and Julie for a comfortable stay. I hope to visit you again.
