good overall, perfect location, restaurant experience could be better

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 4 weeks ago
It is rather odd to get to this hotel passing through an industrial area, being so close to the airport (10-15min car) and yet arriving in a countryside type of environment with sheeps and trees. An oasis of tranquility close to the airport. Perfect!
Large indoor pool with steam and sauna rooms. Large hot tube with jets. Good for relaxing after driving. Only negative point, it is with an outdoor access only, if it is cold or rainy, cover yourself and DO not got there in slippers!
Staff is overall nice and smiling, especially our housekeeping lady, the lady upon check out and the bellman upon arrival.
Rooms are large enough to be comfy and well equipped. Complementary still water and a small milk in the minibar (empty otherwise). Bathrooms with separate shower. All good.
Breakfast ok, neither exceptional nor dissapointing. We did not have the time to try the A la carte part, pity.
The diner was not as positive. The restaurant is not cosy and has a cold overall feeling, lacking of decor and finishing touches. Looking more like a cafeteria than a nice dining room (same place for Bkfst and pretty much same set up), despite some prices on the high end.
I was advised wrongly re soft drinks at the beginning (re content size) and staff brought twice the same drink to me. They forgot my starter and brought the main directly. Some obvious miscommunication.
We had a fish and a rib eye, both very nicely cooked but both with disappointing sides/sauce (too salty or too much vinegar in salad). It put us off ordering desserts.
Overall a good address for a night before or after your plane.

The whole atmosphere is one of attentive, friendly hospitality from registration to checkout. Every team member seemed to be genuinely interested in ensuring my stay was perfect. The Spa team went over and above to change an appointment for me. The room (Classic) in the main house overlooked the grounds and had everything in it I needed. Excellent toiletries and hospitality tray. Meal in the restaurant was first class, as was a dinner in the conservatory. Good choice for breakfast. The grounds are lovely for taking walks and I love the Fairy Wood! The building, spa and grounds are lovely but it is the attitude of the team which makes this so special. There wasn't anything not to like.

Room tip: The hotel is a little way out of Edinburgh but it is so peaceful and in lovely grounds it provides a haven from a busy city.

Dear453janen.
Thank you so much for your most kind words about the team and our hotel. We are so pleased you enjoyed everything. The Gardens really are in the summer peak just now. The wildflowers fragrance just fills the air on an evening stroll round the grounds.
From all at Norton.

Lovely hotel & spa but in a strange place. It is set in the middle of an industrial trading estate, so to begin with we were a bit put off driving through but once you're there you don't notice anything untoward.
Lovely room and bathroom although a little tired.
Fabulous breakfast, evening meal was also very good but extremely expensive as were the drinks.
Very nice spa area but walking outside to get to it in the winter months could be an issue.

Thank you for posting your super review EssexJax
We are so pleased that you enjoyed yourselves whilst you were here.
For the viewers at home, we are set in the middle of our own 55 acre parkland estate surrounded by woodland and wildflower meadows. with views of Edinburgh in the distance. Not in the middle of an industrial trading estate. But you do need to drive through other places to get to us. There are 2 entrances to the estate. Please set you sat nav to the entrance on the A8 for the entrance along our half mile tree lined drive.
Best regards
Michael

Nice enough hotel but unfortunately we got stuck with rooms facing the garbage cans. Poor lighting in bathroom but otherwise clean and well-appointed. Food was mediocre. They did a special show for our tour which was lovely - entertaining, funny and interesting. Biggest issue is it is very very far from the city. Basically way past the airport next to industrial area so if you want to see the city, need to taxi for about $35-50.

We think we are in a pretty good location but admittedly not in the centre of Edinburgh, thankfully. We are 7 miles from the centre of Edinburgh or a 30 minute car journey. We are also a 10 minute journey from the airport. Set in the centre of 55 acres of our own countryside estate surrounded by woodland and arable fields. We have a field full of sheep within the estate. We are an ideal location if you want a country retreat close but away from the traffic and noise of the city centre. We also have a shuttle that runs over the day so you can avoid paying for a taxi and take one of the legendary Edinburgh Trams right into Princes street. The only building that you can see from our land is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Edinburgh Castle beyond the treeline and the tops of the Scotland's second of four other UNESCO World Heritage sites, the Forth Rail Bridge. Although, I agree, not from the bedroom that you were allocated.
I do hope you can return soon to enjoy what we have to offer on your next visit to Scotland.
Best regards
Michael

We are so glad you enjoyed yourself here. Our gardens really are at summer peak just now. Such a lot of wildflowers, its really pretty looking out across to the castle and the forth bridges.
We also have a shuttle that can take you to the Legendary Edinburgh Trams to get you straight into Princes Street without any fuss or traffic jams.
We look forward to your next visit

We came for afternoon tea today at Norton House and had it in the Brasserie part of the hotel after my Mum had a back massage for her birthday.
Lyndsay the Brasserie Manager, made our visit so special and was very attentive and kind making sure my Mum had the best birthday, she is a credit to the Hotel.
The chef/pastry chefs also are amazing at Norton House, they did me a gluten free afternoon tea and the cakes looked exactly like my mums non gluten free ones, that’s a hard thing to do make the gluten free cakes as good as the normal ones but they managed it. The birthday drinks from Lyndsay were also a lovely touch.
Thanks again for a lovely time, we will be back again.
