Having stayed at this hotel a few years ago on business I felt that this hotel would be ideal for a short break in Edinburgh with my wife and daughter. The room was fine as you would expect in a large hotel chain, the problem arose at breakfast time first morning chaos probably seen more orderly feeding time at the Zoo next door, this was minor compared to what was to come on day two, tables full of dirty dishes, no fried eggs,no glasses to get drinks, dirty cups an plates huge ques to get food and so on. I am not a person who complains but in a four star establishment I expected a lot better than this. On checking out I mentioned all my annoyances at reception and was introduced to the duty manager who was very apologetic, she explained that they were short staffed, she offered us free passes to the Zoo and a slot to see the Pandas, my 12 year old daughter was delighted by this and we felt it was a nice gesture. The chaos at breakfast I feel was created by a sign displayed in the lift telling clients they should take breakfast before 9 o'clock to avoid queue's, as breakfast is served Until 11 o'clock I feel that this was totally unnecessary and was a ploy by the hotel to get breakfast service over as soon as possible which completely backfired to the detriment of the guests. As I reminded the duty manager this is supposed to be a four star establishment and service and standards should not be allowed to slip which to her credit she agreed with.

Thank you for taking time to review the hotel. I am sorry that on this occassion we got it wrong. I am glad your daughter was delighted to see the pandas and hope this went some way to redeeming our reputation with you and you family.

I stay here a couple of times a year with my husband and 12-year old daughter and we all love it!

The staff are very friendly and welcoming especially Hamish who greets you each morning for breakfast - and what a breakfast it is too. There is a wide variety of food and drink that would satisfy even the fussiest of eaters.

The rooms are clean and comfortable, with all the basics that you need - towels, toiletries, tea tray etc. They can even provide (lend/sell) you anything that you have forgotten e.g. iPod charger; mobile phone chargers; toothbrushes etc.

Apart from breakfast we have only eaten in the hotel once, for their evening carvery. This was very tasty and great value - my only complaint (if you could call it that) was that the drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, are a bit on the pricey side. Having said that the hotel are happy to provide glasses and ice buckets for bottles of wine/champagne and/or soft drinks that you may have in your room.

Edinburgh zoo is right next door and the frequent buses taking you into (and back from) the City Centre stop are immediately outside the hotel and with the single fares being £1.40 (adult) and £0.70 (Child) - you really can't go wrong! The staff are happy to give suggestions about the visitor attractions and will even tell you exactly what bus numbers will take you there.

I am already looking forward to my next trip to Edinburgh and can guarantee that we will be staying at this Holiday Inn (in preference to all the other Hotels, B&B's etc that Edinburgh has to offer)!

Room Tip: Rooms to the rear of the hotel overlook the hotel and zoo car parks and I find this to be a little quieter than rooms at the front of teh hotel.

How lovely to call us 'home from home'. Thank you for taking the time to write such a positive review and I will, of course, pass on your kind words to Hamish.

Hope to see you again soon.

The check in was very easy and efficiently handled by the check in desk staff. We had a room facing the Pentland Hills the view from the window was to die for.
Breakfast was a great start to your day. The service from the table staff was second to none and this was down to the Restaurant Manager keeping his finger on the pulse.
We had dinner in Sampans the Oriental restaurant in the hotel and I would recommend this to anyone. They cater for any taste and any heat of curry hot,hot hot or not. The waiting staff were very attentive but not overly. At the reception area they have an information board which has apart from things to do in Edinburgh it also includes the buses which you can take into town.
The fares are very cheap it costs £1.40 single or a day ticket at £3.70 takes you from the Gyle Shopping centre right down to Ocean Terminal and a lot more in between.
Enjoy Your Stay at the Holiday Inn Edinburgh.

Room Tip: Any room facing the front of the Hotel as the views are stunning

We stayed here for one night in April with the intention of going to the zoo on the first day and realised as soon as we arrived that we couldn't have stayed any closer to the zoo. We caught a taxi from Haymarket station for about £6 and after dropping off our luggage (we were too early to check in) we walked across the car park to the zoo.

When we later checked in, we found our room was a decent size, particularly the bathroom which was much larger than bathrooms we have normally stayed in. The room was clean and thankfully we were out of range of any noisy animals, which the taxi driver warned us of. We has to ask for an extra towel as they had only provided two small towels and one medium towel but they were quick to provide four extra towels as soon as we returned to our room.

The breakfast in the morning was a standard continental buffet breakfast, but it was quite busy at around 9-9.30am, although we didn't have any problems with food/drink running out. The staff were friendly although, with it being half-term, there were a lot of children running around so we didn't have the best sleep.

If you aren't intending to go to the zoo, you are probably best to stay somewhere closer to wherever you intend to visit, although travelling into the city wasn't too difficult as there was a bus stop outside the hotel/zoo and the bus cost £1.40 for a single trip which is obviously cheaper than the taxi (around £12 from the centre of Edinburgh).

Ive stayed here time and time again........and its my 14yr old sons favourite hotel. Great staff - friendly and welcoming but not in your face - allow you to relax and rest without fuss.........we love staying here. Breakfast now served until 11am - no queueing, great selection food very good..... towels and toiletries tea and coffee items refreshed daily......... and of course the Pandas next door... despite being right next door to the zoo its not noisy though occassionally heard the Male lion roar and the birds nattering first thing at sun up... but I like that........ The bus route is great...regular to city centre - 10mins saves taking car....... RECOMMENDED......

Room Tip: All rooms have Air con and heating, Twin rooms average size but not much more needed. Have stayed on 2nd and 3rd floors and front and back of hotel. Front rooms above 2nd floor have great view............
