“Excellent choice”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 May 2012

We booked this hotel for a 40th birthday treat and loved every minute of it. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The rooms were lovely and very funky (but without being impractical). We ate in the bar and I had the nicest burger I have ever tasted! And the breakfast was amazing too. The location is perfect for exploring the city centre as it's just round the corner from the station. The road at the front is quite noisy which I thought would keep me awake but it didn't so all good. I would highly recommend this as a place to stay. No pun intended.

Dear Fizzbomb_1,
Thank you for choosing us to celebrate your Birthday. I’m delighted you had such great time and thanks so much for sharing your experience. I recently had one of our burgers for lunch (for quality control purposes only!!) and they really are yummy! Hope to see you on your next visit to Edinburgh.
Regards,
Stephen

We have just arrived back home after staying the weekend at this hotel and enjoyed it so much just wanted to write on here to let everyone know how fantastic this hotel is to stay!

On our arrival we were greeted at reception by the friendly staff... On arrival the staff even helped us out booking us into a restaurant we wanted to go to and helped us with plans for the zoo! The first thing you notice as you enter reception is the smell of the fresh flowers..smells gorgeous!!!

Our room was gorgeous too ! We loved the light up bed!!

The hotel was in perfect location for sightseeing, shopping, bars & restaurants ect!

We ate there on our first night and had a few drinks wich was perfect especially as there was live music on which suited the mood of the bar to a T!

Staff at the bar were also so helpful helping us find ways to restaurants and bars ect!

On checking our of our room i had misplaced my engagement ring so we are so thankful so the staff who helped us find it!! life savers!!

Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this hotel and are already planning another trip back here! It totaly made our stay in edinburgh that little bit more special!!

Thank you !!

Dear SarahW830
Thanks for taking the time to write a review, I’m delighted you had such a fantastic experience! Thanks for mentioning the staff; they work hard to deliver a friendly and professional service and it makes me very proud to see all their hard work mentioned in so many reviews! I’m glad you enjoyed the live music as we have just signed the trio, “Blue Velvet”, up for another 6 performances!
I look forward to catching up on your next visit.

I have never actually written a review for tripadvisor, but after our recent stay at The Place, I felt compelled to do so.

My boyfriend and I decided to celebrate our two year anniversary in Edinburgh and upon a friend's recommendation, decided to book new hotel 'The Place'.

We arrived early in the morning and from the moment we stepped foot into the hotel, the mood was upbeat and extremely welcoming. A gentleman greeted us at the reception desk and as we were too early to check in, talked us through the local area and hotel facilities. He couldn't have been more friendly/polite and it really got our mini break off to a good start. He offered to place our bag in the hold while we set off to find some brunch. Before we did so, we had a look around the hotel lounge and bar and admired the decor which is a good mix of modern light fixtures, striking feature wallpaper and comfy seating. With it being a new hotel which is clearly being well maintained, the levels of cleanliness are also to a very high standard.

We returned to the hotel later in the afternoon and were greeted by a friendly female receptionist, who was also extremely attentive. She informed us that we had been upgraded to one of the suites, which we were of course ecstatic about and really made our weekend! We'd originally booked into a standard double which looked to a high standard from the pics so were really excited to see what a suite would look like - and we weren't disappointed.

The suite was extremely spacious with high ceilings and original features and in keeping with the style of the hotel had modern twists such as the art on the walls and fireplace. Then we took a look in the spacious bathroom which was our favourite bit with a gorgeous free standing bath and double shower with a large thatch window overlooking York Place. The bathroom was very clean, modern, bright and airy and was the perfect place to relax in.

We decided to visit the hotel bar before heading out for a meal, and just like the staff on reception, the bar staff were also super friendly and helpful. We had a couple of delicious cocktails and then headed to George St which was just a ten minute walk from the hotel. We had a meal in town and headed to a bar for a drink before deciding to head back to the hotel bar as we'd enjoyed ourselves so much there earlier in the evening. There was quite an extensive cocktail menu but the bar staff assured us if there was anything we wanted that wasn't on the menu they would make it for us. So the fella had a long island ice tea, which he said was one of the best he'd ever tasted and I had a martini.

Another of the highlights of our trip was meeting the night porter, what a character! We'd run out of the milk and so asked him for extra and ended up having a conversation with him all about Edinburgh and our plans to visit again in the summer. Again, we felt the staff across the board, from reception to the bar to night staff couldn't have been more welcoming and friendly, really making our stay.

We both had a really good night's sleep. The mattress was one of the comfiest I've ever slept on and the cotton sheets were clearly of a high standard. Although positioned on a main road, we didn't really notice any outside noise and woke up feeling refreshed.

We are already planning our next trip back to The Place and I couldn't recommend it more. It's the perfect place to stay and our experience there really made our trip all the more special.

Hello Lisa.

Wow !! I dont think I have ever seen such a comprehensive and glowing review. Many, many thanks for taking the time to do that.It means a great deal to the team here that someone felt moved to tell us, in such detail how good we were.

Billy, the night porter, is particularly appreciative of his mention and was only too pleased to help and chat.

It sounds like you will be back at some stage and we all look forward to your return with some enthusiasm.

Thanks again for the wonderful comments

regards

Stephen

Positives are the staff, the general ambience, the convenient location, the good value and the excellent breakfasts (!). Negatives are the noise from York Place (we had a front, top floor room, facing the road) and the oddly sparse furnishing (only one plastic chair in the room - yet there was an ironing board with iron, hair dryer, dressing table and a small separate table). In spite of the negatives, we would stay again - either electing for a rear room - or industrial strength ear plugs

Room Tip: York Place is currently very noisy as a result of bus routes being diverted from Princes Street (owi...

Dear cookgmch

Thank you very much for taking the time to review the hotel.

It is great to see that our staff and breakfasts are still attracting rave reviews. We aim to maintain and improve that consistently high level of service.

As you rightly point out, York Place is currently experiencing much higher levels of traffic than it was designed for, due to the tram works in the city, which we will eventually receive a great benefit from given that the terminus to and from the airport will be directly opposite the hotel.

We have put a great deal of effort into minimising the noise and we have further plans in place which should further eliminate the noise, especially at upper levels. However, a certain amount of street noise is the downside of a city centre location no matter where you stay.

We try, where possible, to move guests who are more sensitive to the noise than others.

Thanks again for your review. We hope you have the chance to visit us again soon.

regards

Stephen

The Palace is a lovely small, intimate boutique hotel. It is located just outside of the hurly, burly of tourist Edinburgh but within very easy walking distance of the the central tourist area. The rooms are miniscule --- so be prepared. But, the accoutrements lovely - excellent bed, stylish details. There is no elevator.

Dear e5000e

Many thanks for taking the time to post a review after your stay. A proportion of our rooms were built with smaller floor space, aimed at the tourist who spends minimal time in the room.It gives us the option of offering a budget priced room in a high standard hotel, not something that is always easy to find in Edinburgh. We do have an excellent selection of superior rooms and suites for guests who require a bit more space and luxury.

Whilst we dont have a lift, we do offer 24 hour portage services free of charge.

I am pleased that we made a good impressionan overall and we hoe to welcome you back soon

regards

Stephen

Refurbished Georgian buildings make for a modern funky interior. Great breakfasts. Attentive group of young staff. No lift but a porters help is always available for luggage.

Dear John.

Many thanks for taking the trouble to post a review. We were not able to incorporate a lift into the building because of its nature and style. It is worthwhile highlighting to future guests that we provide porterage 24 hours a day at no extra cost. Your kind comments regarding breakfast and the staff have been passed on and they are much appreciated.

We hope to welcome you back in the not too distant future.
