“Comfortable stay, great location but shop around first”
Reviewed 19 March 2012

I spent a Saturday night in a clean and comfortable sixth floor room at the rear of the hotel with a splendid view of the Forth with its bridges and Fife in the distance.

The excellent location, highly convenient for numerous restaurants, pubs and entertainment venues in the immediate vicinity, does of course mean a lot of traffic by day and people at night, so I was delighted to find virtually zero traffic noise despite constant activity in the busy street outside.

The room was on the small side but pleasantly decorated and equipped with flat screen TV, sofa, comfortable bed, choice of pillows, and a spotless shower room which appeared recently refurbished.

As I primarily used the hotel as a place to crash out after a night out, I was keen on a Sunday morning lie-in. OK, so I was in no shape for breakfast. Unfortunately, while the bed was comfortable enough the lie-in didn't really happen due to people tramping on very squeaky floorboards in the corridor and even normally-pitched conversation from the early risers next door was highly audible. Bring your ear plugs.

A combination of the central location and generally high demand in Edinburgh must add a premium to the price. Even though I didn't pay the rack rate, I still found the price (booked on Holiday Inn web site) was slightly hefty for a solo stay - probably OK for two - but for me this is simply good, clean, business class accommodation, no more, no less.

The one thing I would note is that the offhand attitude of the member of staff who dealt with my checkout certainly left a slightly bad taste in the mouth. That's a shame as I'd otherwise recommend the hotel for convenient city centre stay, although you should look closely for the best deals or consider other options.

Room Tip: Request a room at the rear of the building, preferably on a higher floor to keep away from street no...

Spent a very enjoyable weekend here recently. Didn't have greeat expectations as it was chosen for it's closenest to city centre but it proved to be a very comfortable hotel with staff who cared. Breakfast was buffet style but was substantial and well presented. Tables were being cleared as soon as they were vacated. Plenty of good restaurants and pubs nearby and only a short walk to Prince's St. Will return to this hotel again.

Room Tip: Our room overlooked the car park and was really quiet (403). Rooms facing the front of the hotel mig...

I have often stayed here on business. it is just topposite the Playhouse with great shows and also the Omni centre which has a cinema and a choice of restaurants. There are also several italian restaurants close by. A short walk takes you to Princess street and all the attractions are within walking distance. I particularly like the 'help yourself' breakfast and they now have a hot breakfast selection. The rooms are very comfortable but you may want to request a quiet room at the back if you are a light sleeper. I was dleighted to get a complimentary 'goody pack' with special teas/biscuits hot chocs etc when I checkd in this week. i am not sure if this was a one off or because I am a member of their priority club; it was a lovely touch though! I would really reccommend it for business or pleasure!

Room Tip: ask for a quiet one at the back

This hotel was in a fantastic location for the train station-waverly (about 10 min walk). we visited the main shopping area, Edinburgh Castle and Edinburgh Dungeons --all walking distance. Edinburgh Playhouse theatre right across the road and city tour buses 10 min walk. Enjoyed the breakfast and staff friendly and helpful. Definately recommend for sightseeing hotel.

This hotel is close to the city centre. Right across the street from the theatre a major shopping centre. The room was small but clean. A very basic hotel, friendly staff and a good breakfast. Very basic but good value for the money.

Over all we found this hotel to be a great choice to Stay in Edinburgh for a couple of nights.
Just a short walk from the very centre of the city, but had enough bars, eateries, small Tesco, and cash point, very close by as well.
The only negative aspect of our stay was, our initial room had a slight leak in the bathroom from the toilet. After reporting this to reception staff (Gordon), this was rectified immediately, by us being transferred to another room with no fuss or bother.
We had no further issues, and found our room to be very clean, comfortable, quiet, with a great shower, and made a great base to explore the City and all it has to offer from.
We found the Breakfast quite basic in choice, but very adequate to set you up for a days exploring. On both days we found it well stocked, and the hot food kept nice and hot.
So from our experience, if you want a nice central hotel on a Budget, then this could be the hotel for you. We would certainly come back again.

I am very sorry to hear of the disruption to your stay caused by the leak in the bathroom, I shall certainly investigate as to how this happened, I am however pleased to hear that our Guest Service Assistant, Gordon was able to assist you with a room move.

It’s great to hear your kind comments regarding cleanliness, location and our breakfast buffet, our team work hard to provide a consistent service and I am grateful to see that this is recognized.

The hotel is a bit far from the Castle and Royal mile so its a bit of a walk to get anywhere. However, the station is nearby. The room was clean and comfortable but the bathroom was very small. No view from the windows as it overlooked the back alley. There was no room service.
The one major issue with the hotel is that the voice travels from one room to the other and its almost impossible to talk. We were interrupted twice at night by other guests who requested us to not talk at all!

Dear A_Nehra,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review regarding your recent stay.

Our hotel is located within the new town area of the city, just a five minute walk from Princes Street and as you have stated a 15-20 minute walk from the Castle and the Royal Mile.

With regards to room service, our hotel is a Holiday Inn Express, therefore as per IHG standards we unfortunately do not provide room service, there is however a wealth of restaurants nearby with all sorts of variety from sandwiches to fine dining establishments.

Once again thank you for your review,

Kind regards,

Gemma Vincent.
