I am sure there are many fine Guest Houses in Edinburgh but a finer one than this I doubt.
I arranged for 2 friends from France to stay at Straven Guest House and their journey was a nightmare long delays and lost luggage to name but a few but on arrival at the guest house they were greeted with a lovely warm welcome along with sympathy and every help with their problems. By the end of the stay my friends could not speak highly enough of Mac and Marian and the hospitality they were given. As an assessor in the hospitality industry I visit many hotels in the UK and Guest Houses on vaccations. I can only say that Mac Marian and the Staven Guest house are a credit to the Industry. If you need accommodation in the Edinburgh area look no further than here you will not be disappointed.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay for a couple of nights in October. Superb breakfast, clean, quiet comfortable room.Ideal place / area to relax after touring Edinburgh's wonderful sights. Lovely to stroll on the promenade in the evening.Mr and Mrs McCool were excellent hosts and helpful with information. The bus into town although very frequent did take 30 mins. No pets ..... fantastic.

We stayed here for a couple of nights in pursuit of Alexander McCall Smith locations and an exhibition at the Museum of Scotland. It really is the best place we have ever stayed and we like it better than the Hilton! A beautiful house, well kept and full of lovely little details , like a painted cornice, flowers everywhere - and 'green' as well. Just brilliant.

Room Tip: Ask for the super king bed! Room 3 has a a nice view over the sea.

My wife and I stayed at Straven in September for three nights. The room was comfortable and clean. The Best breakfast in 4 B and B's in UK, never had better waffles anywhere. The McCools were friendly and helpful. The only complaint that I would have is it takes at least 30 minutes on the bus to get to city centre at what ever time you are traveling by bus.If you want to stay near the water or away from city Straven is a gem.

Room Tip: We stayed on the first floor and it was great.

My wife and I began a 9-day stay in the UK at Straven House for 2 nights. Everything was terrific-- the room, food, Mac and MaryAnn's hospitality and recommendations. The location was great for a total getaway-- off the beaten path enough to feel away, but accessible to the city. We would certainly do it all over again. We worked our way down to London where we spent 3 times as much for significantly less of everything.

Room Tip: I think all rooms are en-suite and we had no problems with anything, even though we're spoiled A...

We (6 friends) stayed in the Straven Guest House for 1 night. We were received by mrs. Mac very friendly and helpful. The house is very lovely, als well as the rooms. Also there was a great common room, which we didn't use. Close to the house there is a bus stop. The buses take you to Edinburgh in 20 minutes, so that is really easy!
The breakfast was amazing, quite a lot of food and mr. Mac was a friendly chatter!

Also I liked the attention the SGH pays to durability and the environment; you see this in everything!

My partner and I visited Straven Guest House the day after our Civil Ceremony, looking for a few quiet days away after a most hectic week. The location is spot on- a wonderfully peaceful spot seconds from a beautiful promenade and beach, with good parking and public transport links.
But what makes this place are the owners, Mac and Marian. The welcome we received, with the information about the local area, was by far the most comprehensive, detailed and entertaining we're ever known- the passion for their business and the delight in welcoming their guests shines out.
The large breakfast choice permitted something different every day should we have wanted, the décor was immaculate throughout and the cleanliness in every nook and cranny was faultless. The card we found in our room to congratulate us on our big day the day before was the icing on an already wonderful cake.
Incidentally, Mac and Marian are looking at moving to pastures new in the future, and we wish them all the best. Anyone lucky enough to take over this establishment, while taking over a beautifully kept property, will have their work cut out meeting the high standards already set.
