Description: Located in a historic 16th century building at the gates of Edinburgh Castle, James Thomson's Witchery is the most atmospheric and spectacular dining destination in the city. A unique setting, stunning interiors and superlative food, wine and service combine to create memorable dining experiences for locals, visitors and celebrities alike. The staff use the best of Scotland's produce including Angus beef, lamb, game and seafood. Nestled in the most historic part of the building, The Witchery dining room is rich, warm and atmospheric, with tapestries, mirrors and carvings hanging on oak-panelled walls. Spectacularly painted and gilded ceilings, similar to those at the Palace of Holyrood House, celebrate the links with France in the Auld Alliance, whilst much of the panelling was rescued from St Giles Cathedral and a Burgundian Chateau. Gilded antique leather screens, polished church candlesticks and opulent red leather seating complete the surroundings of this splendid dining location.

Had lunch at the witchery on Tuesday lunchtime 3rd April, didn't book but was offered a table quickly and easily. Had the two course meal plus a couple of drinks. Service was good and the young lady was most helpful. Fod was good and set price was ok. What was a shock was my small bottele of Inns and Gun beer. Six pounds was an eye opener. I had paid four pounds in other places and that was enough. On coming home I bought a 3 bottles for £3.60 , £1.20 a bottle, now I appreciate alcohol mark up but that was OTT. All was good apart from the beer experience.

We were sat in the room at the back of the restaurant, close to the stairs and in the middle of a very cold draft, between the toilet door and the kitchen door.
We asked to move to an other table but we were told it was not possible though there were a few tables available in the "warm" area.
Back to concrete things, the food is overpriced and above all bad. We had the salmon which was overcooked (both as a starter or a main). The ribeye steak was cold too, as well as the french fries. The butter did not "manage" to melt on the top...

That's very rare but we did not have any sweet, since we wanted to run away from this very bad and pretentious place... as fast as possible...
Avoid this place if you can!!

Whether you're dining in the main restaurant or the secret garden, this is truly a dining experience. All courses including whiskey did not disappoint. We all tried something different, so we could share and not miss out on their wonderful selections. Only thing missing was a good "Sticky Toffee Pudding".

We needed a good restaurant in Edinburgh to celebrate my birthday and this really did fit the bill. Excellent food in lovely surroundings with very attentive staff. If you choose their set price 3 course meal option its not too pricey either!
