“WOW!”
Reviewed March 21, 2015 for a stay in March 2015

Love it. What a fantastic place! Clean (spotless), comfortable, beds are really comfy and the welcome pack was so appreciated. There's a Starbucks 2 minutes away (really). A local shop and glorious views. You feel like you are cut off from everything and it is just so relaxing. You have Internet access but really who needs it? Layout is excellent with plenty of space for 6 adults if needed.

“High quality accommodation”
Reviewed July 19, 2014 for a stay in June 2014

The lodges at John O'Groats are beautifully equipped and very comfortable. There's a clean Scandi look, but with use of local materials which fit in well with the surroundings. You get a welcome pack of mostly local foods; Caithness not really being a wine growing area; and there are supermarkets a short drive away in the towns of Thurso and Wick. But while you're out exploring the area you'll come across lots of small producers which should be tried; there's a farm shop just up the road. If the weather isn't kind you can stay inside , read a book or play a board game (provided) but you should really get out and about and explore this little known region.
I've given an overall high score because of the quality of the lodges but some fine tuning could become to make this place even better. The whole experience doesn't appear to be quite as slick as promised on the website. Having said that we made our own arrangements for trips etc so can't comment on the services provided by The Outfitters. The onsite cafe/ bar (The Store) closes early so there's not many options for evenings out. This may be to prevent taking trade from the local hotel but I think an onsite option in the evenings would be welcomed by guests.
A little fine tuning could turn this place from very good to excellent.
A tip, whilst all lodges have views of the sea, pay the extra for the Sea View lodges which have a n unrestricted view to the West, ideal for watching the sunset on those long summer days.

“Natural Retreats - A Real Treat!”
Reviewed October 4, 2013 for a stay in September 2013

We stayed at National Retreats in John O'Groats for nine nights and we were over the moon with the accommodation. Spacious, spotless and with every home comfort. The open plan kitchen/lounge/dining room was ideal and the fact that we didn't have to book Saturday to Saturday was an added bonus. However, better than that, we were able to take our two dogs who absolutely loved the place and spent many happy hours watching the rabbits bouncing about outside the panoramic windows. We enjoyed it so much that we have already booked again for next year at a location down south!

Liked best: The layout of the property.
Liked least: The fact that we should have paid for a sea view but this was down to my stingy husband!
