“Perfect B&B, amazing hospitality”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 June 2012 via mobile

We had an absolutely fabulous couple of days at Strathness House, the first part of our Highlands tour. We arrived a little early but the owners were happy to take in our bags until the rooms were ready, and gave us the wifi codes so we could catch up in the lounge. We went out for a bit of lunch and when we got back our room was ready. We were checked in by Javed, one of the friendliest people we've ever met! He took the time to welcome us, and then gave us a detailed lowdown on both Inverness itself and some suggestions for some sightseeing the next day. We took his recommendations of the tour north, and didn't regret it!

The room itself was very nice, we had 12 on the top floor, on the corner with a lovely view of the River Ness. The room was comfortable, clean and the ensuite was new and in great condition. Very comfortable, nice and quiet, just what we were looking for!

Breakfast is lovely, there's a good selection of juices, cereal, fruit and plentiful rounds of toast, before your choice of a full breakfast. Very nice indeed, and very filling!! Javed is always around to make sure you've got everything you need, a great host.

All in all I would highly recommend Strathness House, and we will be back if/when we return to Inverness next time!

On a nine day touring holiday in Scotland, this was one of the best places we stayed. It was spotlessly clean and had everything we needed, either on the premises or very nearby and all of the staff we met were helpful and friendly.

The staff were great when my partner lost her handbag. Joan immediately helped us by phoning the places we had visited and also making the police report for us. On finding that we had left the bag at a cafe far away, Joan suggested what turned out to be a very good place to eat on the way back and thus turned what could have been a very bad day for us back into a good one.

We have absolutely nothing to complain about. Inverness is a good destination and Strathness House is everything we hoped it would be.

Stayed here for a night on a family holiday through scotland. The location is great and the room were of an average standard. We could feel mattress springs in our backs and had to use the duvet to provide extra padding. Our stay started well enough. But it turned sour in the morning. I was having a problem with the shower and had to listen to highly patronising lecture from the owner about how I didn't know how to use the shower. This was then excused as how people from the area speak with no apology, fortunately, from my time in Scotland I have only found the scots to be the some of the most hospitable. Overall, this place is an average b&b ok if you literally need a room to sleep. Certainly not worth the £90 rate.

Room Tip: River views are great

We think that it requires to be known, that there is another side to this poor review. We here at Strathness House, go that little bit further to make everybody’s stay here as pleasant and as comfortable as possible as you can see from our previous reviews.
This guest and some of his family from India, stayed with us for one night. He is correct, everything was well until he telephoned Reception in the morning to say that he was not able to get the shower to work. I tried to explain to him how the shower works, but he was not able to understand. I passed him onto my partner who again tried to explain to him, in detail. He failed to grasp the explanation and became upset (possibly at his lack of understanding), It was explained to him that the shower was simple to work and that it was his failure to comprehend the instructions that was the problem. He was not happy at this suggestion and then went onto complain that the mattress was not comfortable as he felt a spring coming through.
We tried to deal with one issue at a time. Explaining that there might indeed be a fault in the shower (after all, they are electrical appliances - and they do breakdown when you least expect them to). My partner offered to go his room and show him how the shower worked and this would also show if indeed there was a fault, but he refused. We thought that this was because his wife was in the bedroom and knowing how protective people from the Asian Continent are about their female family and that it would not be permissible for a male to enter the room. So we offered to have one of the female housekeepers to go and help, but this again was refused and he hung up.
During the telephone call when he made reference to the uncomfortable mattress, he was assured that we would investigate this issue as it had never been raised before (his answer to this … was that “there is a first time for everything”). This mattress was checked, turned and inspected in detail and there has been no evidence of protruding springs. Also this would have been picked up by the Housekeeping staff as this is part of their job.
All guests that have slept on this bed since that day have all been asked consciously how they found the bed. We have had no complaints.
As a matter of interest, the shower did not have a fault and is working well – to this day!
What grieves us more than anything is the way that his behaviour and attitude upset all his family and my staff and other guests. He clearly does not like to be questioned about his inaccuracies and lack of understanding.
His family had been waiting for him for over half an hour, to join them for breakfast.. His sisters had approached us to tell us that it was his birthday and wondered if we could offer something special at breakfast to surprise him. We had explained that if they had told us the night before we would have had something ready, but if they left it with us we would see what we could do. At this point they were unaware of the complaints he had made. They were all asked how they slept and if all was well with their stay, to which they replied that they were all happy.
One of our housekeeping staff went to the local supermarket and purchased a Birthday cake, so that his family could surprise him. We had gone out of our way and had also prepared a special breakfast for the whole family as they had stated the previous evening that they were all Vegetarians.
All this was for nothing……. as when he came downstairs, he came down with his bags and his jacket on. He spoke to his family briefly, and it then became evident that he did not want them to stay any longer and they all proceeded to leave. I know that his family had been waiting patiently for him and were looking forward to having breakfast. This did not happen.
I would like to add, that I know that we are not able to please everyone, but this kind of selfish and arrogant person will never be happy with anything. The impression and attitude he gave, was that he was always RIGHT and everyone else was below him.
Incidentally, he did not pay 90GBP for his room. As a matter of courtesy, they were not charged for breakfast and his father paid the bill.
We also cannot understand how he can only rate our Cleanliness and Services as 2- 3 Star, you only have to look at the previous comments and reviews. Our housekeeping staff are most upset. He is obviously bearing grudges………..most unfair.

Strathness House is central to everything in beautiful Inverness. Our room was large, light and airy with a view of River Ness. Our hosts we extremely helpful and knowledgeable. The recommendations for dining were spot on, and our laundry was taken care of overnight when we found out that the laundromat had closed. We were very grateful. We would definitely recommend Strathness House as a great place to stay, and the breakfast was perfect.

Once more, a pleasant stay with Joan & Javed. What a pity some of the more expensive hotels around can't provide the same service. Good breakfasts freshly cooked, clean & comfortable rooms at a reasonable price. What more can you ask for?

Javed and Joan made our stay at Strathness House pure pleasure. We rented a car so we could cover more territory and Javed gave us very good directions and suggestions for special places to stop along the way. We only got lost once ~ after leaving the petrol station. Damn those round abouts! The countryside is beautiful. Inverness is like visiting a faerie tale. We put our hands in the North Sea, visited castles and daydreamed watching the River Ness rush by. Our room was exquisite, comfortable and homey. The full on Scottish breakfast was a wonderful start to our busy days. I miss Scotland already and hope to return to Inverness one day. Cheers to Joan and Javed and keep up the good work!

Room Tip: The front corner room has perfect views of St. Andrews and the River Ness. We stayed in two rooms w...
