After scaling Ben Nevis and staying in a lovely hostel across the road the night before, we arrived in good spirit.
Obviously, The Smiddy Bunkhouse aspires to extend your days adventures into your stay as a reception / greeting point is impossible to find. Nevertheless, after doing a good deal of searching and standing, another group, very kindly as we did not know them, staying at the hostel invited us into their quarters for a bit of warmth.
Be warned, this is the worst offence you can commit at the Smiddy Bunkhouse! The owner / manageress appeared almost immediately after this, implying she had most probably seen us and begging the question why didn't she come and greet us / let us in for the time we were standing around wet & cold?
We (both groups) were then beneficiaries of a lengthy and embarrassing telling off. This was followed by the 'tour'; basically a continuation of the aforementioned telling off, but whilst moving to the next building and around the rooms.
Now unfortunately, our new friends had forgotten rule no. 1 and came over to discuss what had just happened. As we apologised to each other for the manageress, over she popped over again for another extended telling off.
In my adult life I have never been spoken to in such a manner. We now had another guest staying with us, the manageress herself. We were being 'guarded' to prevent a repetition of the previous debacle.
Tired and offended we went out for dinner, before arriving back at a reasonable hour (11ish). The next morning, we shared breakfast with another group who had arrived in the room next to us and were not surprised to hear of their equally bad experience.
We left as soon as possible, but not before overhearing the husband of the manageress threaten "knock the block off" and "do in" a member of this other group.
I cannot stress enough how offended I was during this stay, ruining what was an otherwise pleasurable holiday.
