I took the Kyle Line from Inverness to Kyle of Lochals on a sunny september day. The view was stunning. I would recomend sitting on the right side of the train (or the left side if you are taking the train from Kyle). There are good views from both sides, but the best view was on the right side.

We were blessed with superb weather, but in reality this line is wonderful in any weather and at any time of year. If you sit on the right side going towards Kyle the views are stupendous, and you get really close to the coast. If the tide is right you can spot heron, seabirds and other wildlife on the shore.

A glorious day out to enjoy the beauty of the highlands by train from Inverness to Kyle. It's a 2 and half hour trip each way and a wonderful day out to see so much beauty if the highland. You should book and reserve seats as it is a very popular trip and fills up fast. Allow time to arrive and get your ticket and seats. Book online and you can pick up tickets at station machine.
Highly recommend this a great day out, so much to see. Can't wait to go again.

My wife and I travelled from Kyle of Lochalsh Station to Strathcarron Station by a normal service train. With a Twotogether rails it worked out at just £4.15 each for what must be one of the most scenic rail journeys in the world, along the shores of Loch Carron virtually all the way. As I said, an ordinary service train, so don't look for steam-hauled, but sit on the left side of the carriage with a full windows and the views are really special. We had a lift arranged at Strathcarron, but let me warn you there is nearly nothing there - the station, one hotel (which served no food between 2.30 and 6), a phone box (terrible mobile service) and a few houses. So its worth making arrangements carefully for the return journey. Although, I bet the return trip by train would be a cracker. too.

We travelled this route in both directions. On the outward journey it was very busy due to two coach parties. However, staff were helpful and we were seated throughout. Quieter on return. Snack and drinks trolley available. The views along the stretch of Loch Carron are out of this world as the train loops around towards Plockton. Lived up to its name as one of the most beautiful railway journeys. Comfortable and highly recommended.
