We were very disappointed with our stay at this hotel. We have travelled a fair bit and stayed in all sorts of accommodation. We very rarely complain.

To be fair there were some good points:

The staff were very friendly and helpful.

The food in the breakfast room and the restaurant was all very tasty and well presented.

The hotel is very quiet if you stay in one of the rooms at the back.

Both rooms we had were spacious.

The tulips on the tables were nice.

The beds were comfortable.

However!

This hotel badly needs major refurbishment. Yes the curtains were nice, the linen was fine. But both rooms had issues. Our first room: the window was jammed and it was a very hot day. The bed was next to the window and so it was unbearable. We like to sleep with the window open, especially one with no air conditioning. In the meantime I used the bathroom. The decor was very old and tired. Mould and stains on the ceiling. Plastic panels badly joined by bits of plastic. The mastic was old and dis coloured. Although the room had been decorated in recent years the furniture was marked, broken, very worn and the carpet stained. It just looked unloved and stunk of stale cigarette smoke despite being a non smoking room.

We knew we would not sleep well so we asked for the window to be sorted out.

The receptionist said the air conditioning was being turned on later that day - I don't think our room even had it so what she thought that would achieve I don't know.

To be fair we were moved to another room where the window worked and we were able to sleep in a well ventilated room. Our second room had the same mixture of good and bad. Comfy bed and spacious. The shower was over the bath in this room so not easy to use. Same type of damage to walls, furniture and carpet. If a hotel looks neglected not all the clientele look after it.

The main breakfast room was nice but the windows needed a damn good clean and there were a couple of very grey cobwebs visible.

It is such a shame. The hotel is obviously popular because it is well placed to travel around. I can only think its popular because of the staff and the food.

If it was refurbished, e.g. repainted, new bathrooms and bathroom fixtures and fittings it would deserve a good rating.

People like to stay in clean rooms in a good condition that don't smell of smoke.

We also had no tv remote but this was provided on request.

In its current condition we would not stay here again.

We thought that the most positive thing was the staff ranging from reception, breakfast room and domestic help. They were helpful and friendly, making our stay very pleasant. We did find that our room was a bit dated décor wise, but was clean and comfortable. The location was ideal for us, being close enough to the city (caught a bus in) and also on a main road enabling easy access to outside attractions (Blarney Castle less than 10 min away by car).

As regular visitors to the commons once again we were not disappointed. Staff helpful and friendly as ever especially Angie on reception couldn’t be more friendly and welcoming after a long journey exactly what you want a friendly face. The food is excellent and the breakfast staff Ann and Mary were always there with a friendly smile and welcoming words, nothing was too much for them whatsoever.
We love staying here and will be back again soon.

Stayed here for the weekend of Ed Sheeran playing in Cork. Now I know that rooms were at a "premium" on the weekend in question - which is totally understandable. However, if I'm paying "premium" prices, then I at least expect some kind of basic standards. From having no hot water, to staying in a "non-smoking" room that smelled of stale cigarettes, I really felt that they had a cheek in charging what they wanted - just because they could!! Speaking to other people in the breakfast room on the morning of departure, we definitely weren't the only people complaining. The breakfast was inedible - I, again, was not the only one with this issue, I would think, as a lot of the vacated tables had plates laden with food - just left there. The dark haired girl on reception (with glasses) was most unpleasant - it was a case of "be glad you got a room - Ed's in town!!!" When departing, she didn't even ask was everything OK with our stay - too busy playing with her phone!!! No wonder she didn't though - probably spends her time there fielding complaints from customers. The management would really want to get themselves sorted here - they have a cheek to charge what they do - just because other hotels do it doesn't mean you can - other hotels have standards - not so at the Commons Hotel! A total rip off!!! AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!

Weekend spent at the hotel celebrating two special birthdays made even better by the fabulous service of the breakfast staff Paul and Mary. Paul made a great start to the weekend by helping us with our plans and for producing candles and cake for the birthday girls. Fantastic service.
