Had a wonderful time with great stories by Johnny. Great food and a great old pub. We were there for lunch and returned for the evening stories. We got his CD. We will return.
We stumbled upon this by accident on our first trip to Ireland in December 2012 and went again when we were there in May 2016. We will go there again when we visit next year.
If you're going to eat out for dinner anyway, which I'm sure you will while you're in Dublin, you definitely should stop by the Brazen Head (which was founded in 1198!) and listen to Helena tell her stories about Irish folklore and the food culture. My study abroad program brought a group of 20 year olds to this, and I think every single one of us stayed off our phones to listen to her speak because she is so engaging and talented with crafting her storylines. I feel like this event shows a different side of the culture than the museums in Dublin do, because it is very personable and Helena is telling stories about day to day life and not about important politicians or wars. The food was great as well!
This evening is a great event. It is held in a room on the second floor of the Brazen Head, the oldest pub in Ireland. There is an open fire crackling and lots of atmosphere. You get a three course meal of traditional Irish food, with around 4-5 choices for each course. The food itself is excellent. The host, Johnny, is very entertaining to talk to and tells all sorts of fabulous folklore and fairy stories. It is suitable for around ages 12 and up. Wonderful, very reasonably priced evening.
I admit I was skeptical of this, expecting a guilty-pleasure tourist-trap experience, but it was truly excellent. Helena Byrnes clearly knows her stuff - I know a bit about Irish history and folklore myself, so I can generally sniff out balderdash. Her material was fascinating and her delivery first-rate. She also has a lovely singing voice, which I would have enjoyed hearing more of. The musical duo - a pair of The Obligatory Crusty Old Men - was entertaining and got the crowd involved. The food? Not gourmet by any means - I had Irish stew and my husband had salmon and both our meals were fine. I wish I could have finished my chocolate fudge cake, but there are limits! In any case, it's the stories and music that make this evening special.
We had a brilliant time. Johnny's storytelling is otherworldly - his humour and passion for the craft really made the night. We'd love to come again.
