“Very poor service and staff attitudes”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 July 2011

We had flights cancelled after checking -in, due to the Volcanic Ash situation. We phoned Valentino at The Portobello immediately to advise that we could not make it over until a few weeks later but would book our family for 2 nights instead of 1(2rooms). He just abruptly said 'no way,.... I am keeping your money paid in full for 2 rooms !'
So we travelled over by ferry the next day and stayed at another hotel.. excellent, but on a visit to The Portobello that day , it wasn't busy at all, and very noisy.
We had a drink there but one of the glasses was dirty, so we all left... what a poor excuse for service, and an extremely poor welcome for tourists !
We have visited I reland over 100 times in the past, but this hotel gave us our very worst experience by far!!
To be avoided at all costs.. we wrote to The Irish Tourist Board about this, and they wrote to the Portobello asking them to write within 14 days.. that was 60 days ago and still no response..they just don't care about your 'visitor experience' !
Thank goodness that Dublin has much much more to offer than this place !

I booked this hotel (with now an ex) on the principle of price and good reviews and i'm glad I did so. The room facilities were excellent and the bed was extremely comfortable. The room was relatively very clean and the staff at reception were very helpful. I stayed two nights in the portobello and each morning I was provided with a delicious full Irish breakfast with a wide variation of fruit, juices and tea and coffee with gave a great start to each day. It's located a bit far out and takes about 15 minutes to walk into the centre, but there's a regular bus service that goes into the centre located not too far away from the hotel. The only annoying thing I found about it (as a smoker), everytime I had to go outside, I had to buzz to gain the receptionists attention who wasn't always present at the desk so was stuck in the rain on a few occasions but other than that everything was good.

The staff at the hotel were really friendly they couldnt do enough to help We stayed in a family room the beds were really comfortable and the rooms were really clean. The food was excellent the breakfast you had a choice of cerals and cooked breakfasts. There is a lovely bar just next to the hotel. We plan to stay there again in the near future.

We stayed at the Portobello for 2 nights in April and were very pleased with everything. It's about a 15 minute walk from downtown Dublin, but worth it for the quietness. Free WiFi, and breakfast were definitely a nice bonus. The restaurant downstairs is pretty good too. Rooms were nice, all in all, we would definitely stay there again.

nice hotel, clean and big rooms with tea and coffee (and biscuits!) facilities. not really near the centre but neither that far. bus stop around the corner, the buses for the centre pass very often.
we were on the third floor so we had no problems with the noise of the club, just sometimes we could here it a little bit. probably if we were on the first floor our stay wouldn't have been that good.
fiendly and helpful staff: our shower didn't work (only the cold water) so they gave us the key of a free single room next to ours saying we could have use that bathroom too.
wonderful irish breakfast! but also continental one with juices, toasts, butter and jam.
good value.

Room Tip: try to get the room on the third floor

This hotel is nice and clean enough for the rate, but its located on top of a nightclub so the chance of getting any kind of reasonably quiet rest won't happen. If you stay here request to stay on an upper floor, not on the 1st floor unless you plan on staying out until 3 or 4 in the morning.

Firstly, we came here from the USA for 9 nights for some rest having not had a vacation for 5 yrs. As I am from Scotland and my wife is from the states I thought it would be a good mix of cultures to see the sights of Ireland from Dublin.
How wrong could I have been !
THe main issue was that there is no where to park at this Hotel, we are talking about no parking lot whatsoever ! Street parking if you are at the right time will cost you up to $ 40.00 per day, thats PER DAY !!!!!!
If you choose to go out then make sure you are out by 8.00 am and do not return before 6.30 pm otherwise you will have to feed the parking meter at a rate of $ 4.00 per hour.
Food was excellent, staff were helpful to a degree. When challenged about the parking on the first day I was met by " Lets have a drink on the house" as if that going to make any differance ...
The stress from trying to constantly think about getting out of the Hotel every day except weekends when its free was just to much for me.
THe rooms are nothing like any of the pictures, a bed that was not close to big enough for us, a TV that neither me or my wife could actually see it was so small ( 9 inch CRT ) showers that are unregulated Hot or Cold no in between. No A/C - the room was Hot or just a Sauna as we were on the top floor.
Not only would i not reccomend this Hotel I would advise you to stay along way from it.
