Irelands biggest cemetery holds alot more than just dead people! It is a look at the history of Irelands biggest city, with all sort of VIP's buried here, from past presidents, republican rebels, patriots, celebrities, martyrs etc. They are all buried here. The designs of some of the richer peoples graves is quite spectacular, in all their celtic beauty and intricacy. I don't live too far from here, and it proves a really great place just to go for a stroll, and at the same time tip your hat to a few dead relatives.
It's all a bit unusual to the foreign visitor this, the Irish have a very good relationship with their dead relatives, and as you travel around ireland it would be rather unusual to see an empty cemetery, Glasnevin is no exception to the rule, as well as regular funerals and cremations going on, you will see droves of people visiting around their friends and relatives, especially at weekends, there are even special grave days where hundreds of people will come out and tend to graves, this is really worth a look for the visitor.
As well as this, there is a museum of genealogy, a cafe, a couple of flower shops, and offices. Yes it's true, the dead are definitely alive and kicking here in Glasnevin!
Easily accessible from town, it even offers a guided tour to interested persons.
Overall, Glasnevin Cemetery is just a little more than what it says on the gate, it is a place for a stroll, socialising, visiting, history, and even a nice cuppa and a scone. Ah go on! you know you want to, people are just dying to get in there!

I really enjoyed the tour by Eamon MacTomas and visiting Daniel O'Connell's tomb. It is of cultural and historical interest.

Interesting exhibition, lots of interactive elements, very impressive modern building, and a cute cafe. And of course he cemetery itself is fasinating.
We didn't do the cemetery tour as it takes an hour and we didn't have time, so allow yourself at least two hours to visit, to see both the exhibition and tour.

Went with family n two sons aged 9 and 6. Tour was brilliant. Irish patriots are all here and the tour guide told ther stories really well. O'connells family vault is definitely the highlight and not to be missed. Found my great grand parents grave which was an unexpected bonus.
