We missed the hotel to begin with. The only sign we found was after we passed the hotel as it said “Ballyseede Hotel Previous Left”. From the outside this looked like it was going to be better than Abbeyglen; however this was far from it. We were in the lobby a good 15 minutes before someone waited on us. There was an adorable dog in the lobby lounging which we thought was adorable. We arrived at 7pm and were told there was no dinner for the night, even though every thing we ready said dinner was served from 7 – 9pm. We were shown to our room which was very spacious yet it was two double beds. Um, this was our honeymoon and 2 double beds would do. I went down to the desk and had to search for an employee for nearly 10 minutes in order to get a new room. Our new room had a king bed and no room to move around. The hotel was not that busy so I am not sure why we got the little room. The front door locks at night so I wonder what would have happened if we would have arrived any later. The bar was never busy yet the staff was never around. We went in the second night to hang out and it was horrible for them to wait on us. They could have said, I will be back, ring a bell when you need something, but they just disappeared and we very rarely seen them.

On our B&B holiday booked through Authentic Ireland, my wife and I were given the option to upgrade for a castle stay. We chose Ballyseede Castle mainly for its location, and it is hard to imagine that we could have made a better choice. As mentioned earlier, it is more of an estate house than a castle, but the large rooms with ornate decorations made us feel as if we were in a castle. Our double room was huge and had any possible amenity. There were other guests, but so few that we virtually had every lounge and even the large sitting room to ourselves.

The members of the staff were pleasant and attentive without any unnecessary formality. Arthur, the Irish wolfhound, left us alone unless we paid attention to him, but we found him a comforting presence at the front door.

My wife and I, as well as a friend traveling with us, had dinner in front of the carved-wood fireplace in Balleyseede's charming pub. It was a thoroughly delightful meal in a handsome, masculine room.

The word that best describes our stay at Ballyseede is "comfortable." Everything about Ballyseede Castle, especially its staff, makes a guest feel comfortable. We anxiously look forward to our next visit to Ireland and a longer stay at Ballyseede.

My husband really wanted us (family of 5, 3 children) to stay in a castle at least one night on our trip to Ireland so Ballyseede worked the best in our itinerary. While Ballyseede really is a castle, it looks more like a large, old hotel. Our room was at the top of 3 flights of stairs and there did not appear to be an elevator. We asked for a family room and were put in a very large room on the corner. The clerk put a rollaway bed in the room so we could sleep 5 which was perfect for us. The room even had a coffee table and a couple chairs for relaxing. The kids ate pub food in the bar and we ate the prix fixe meal in the dining room. The meal in the dining room was very good, large filets, savory soup, just an extremely nice experience.
The room was clean but the sink and the bathtub had a really slow drain so the last person showering was treated to a foot bath before the shower even began!
The castle is not really near anything but since it had a dining room and bar, that wasn't an issue for us that night as we did not leave the castle after we checked in.
Ballyseede was nice enough, but not exactly the "Castle Experience" for which we were hoping.

First off, Ballyseede is not a castle and never was one. It is an old manor that is advertised as a castle, so if you are looking for a true Irish castle experience you will not it at Ballyseede.
We arrived at Ballyseede mid-afternoon and rang the service bell, as there was no one at the desk. After a few minutes a very frustrated woman appeared...she did not welcome us, she did not introduce herself...she only wanted a voucher, which we did not have. She disappeared for a few seconds then yelled for us to follow her. She led us down a stairwell to the ground floor, past very smelly bathrooms and unlocked a door at the far end of the hallway. The woman said,'the key is in the door', and walked off without giving us any information at all. She did not mention the times breakfast was served, who we should contact if we had any questions, nothing. We were left to consult the directory inthe room for breakfast times, telephone extensions, etc.
There is a resident 'dog' that lives at Ballyseede. His name is Arthur and he is the largest dog I have ever seen in my life. He also hasn't had a bath in years, so the entire foyer and first floor reek of Arthur. He chose to lie between the front door step or in front of the fireplace in the foyer. He does not budge even an inch which made getting luggage into Ballyseede quite a task. No one offered to help with that either, by the way.
At first glance the bedroom was beautiful and looked clean. However I noticed broken hardware on the furniture, the sueded headboard on the bed was visibly stained and there was already trash in a wastebasket as if it was not emptied from the previous guest. Then I had issue with the bed itself...the blanket had unknown hair stuck to it, and as if that wasn't enough to gag me, I found blood...blood on the pillowcase! If this place did not have such a strict cancellation policy we would have been out of there in 2 minutes!
There was a dead beetle that lived in the obviously unvacuumed hallway that was there upon our arrival and was still there when we departed 2 nights later.
We found that the telephone was broken and that no one stayed in the 'castle' overnight while guests were there. So if you needed help for any reason...you were on your own..unless Arthur could help...doubtful.
Breakfast was OK...with exception of the old, soft apples and very brown bananas offered on the buffet table. The same very stressed woman served breakfast.
When we went to check out, again no one was there. Overall, the Ballyseede was a complete disgust and disappointment...do your best to stay away!

The Ballyseede Castle provided us with one of our favorite memories from a recent visit to Ireland. We really enjoyed the room and the breakfast (and chose to drive in to Tralee for the dinner...ask for directions to Finnigan's Downstairs restaurant next to the Ashe Town House for an amazing meal!), and the overall atmosphere was just wonderful. There is also internet access for a charge. But the environment inside the castle is just really cool, with a definite historical feel. And hopefully everyone will get a chance to meet King Arthur, a very cool (and very large) dog who rules over the castle. My wife and I would highly recommend stopping here for the night if you get a chance!

The Ballyseede is absolutely a lovely place to stay. The downstairs bar is AMAZING and quite comforting. We enjoyed a quite relaxing afternoon there, looking at on the beautiful countryside, drinking whiskey and ginger ale and relaxing. It was an excellent start to our Ireland adventure and is highly recommended!

My wife and I spent a night here on our whirlwind tour of the south and west of Ireland. The castle is charming and the grounds are beautiful. Our room was spotless and well-appointed and the bathroom was recently redone. Pay as you go internet access allowed us to check in on things back home as well.

Outside, the vines along the outside of the castle had been cleared and there was evidence of some ongoing construction/maintenance activities that slightly detracted from the ambiance. I think the climbing vines would have added a nice touch.

Inside, there were some minor inconveniences in the bathroom probably related to the recent remodel. The stopper in the sink did not want to release, for instance.

Overall this was a great stay and I'm glad I experienced a night here.
