The postcode of the Hotel does not help find the hotel because of a one-way system. Entering the address does not work for the same reason. We discovered from reception that there is a solution if you use a different postcode. This is not advised to customers on the website or in booking confirmations. It should be.
We wanted a bottle of water to take to our room and to charge it to our room account. The member of staff (apparently a new employee) at the bar didn’t know what to do even though we showed her the “Charge Card” issued to us when we checked in the previous day (this card shows that the guest has left credit card details on check in and authorises that charges can be made to it). Another member of staff came to assist – she had previously served us a meal and drinks all of which had been charged to our room. She failed to engage with us properly and just parroted “You have to have a card swiped to your room” – which of course we already had done as the “charge card” proved! Voices were raised – we do not tolerate bad customer service! The Duty Manager then intervened and harangued us for having raised our voices! There was no apology. We again explained that we had been frustrated by the poor service and
the Car Parking issues (see below). No apology at all.
On the same day as the payment problems we returned to the hotel in the evening to find that there was no parking space. There had been no information about what to do in such circumstances. Cars were illegally parked as well – there was no room for us as residents. Some spaces were occupied by staff cars others by non-resident customers. We were directed to street parking nearby which was free until 8:00am the next morning. Not ideal, but the only option it seemed. However a resident who arrived later than us was permitted to park his vehicle close to the front of reception in what was not a normal parking space. Perhaps he was a regular?
The service was very poor – we waited 40 minutes for our main course with no apologies and no information. Curiously the restaurant was not over busy. The food was good though!
For a self-proclaimed “International” Hotel the breakfast is parochially English and of borderline quality. Yes there was a “full English” available on the buffet but not a lot else. The fruit choice was apples and bananas (whole fruit) and tinned grapefruit segments.
In summary considering we paid rack rate (£150 per night!) because of the high occupancy for part of our 5 night stay we were treated abysmally at this very ordinary hotel. No doubt their regular customers get good deals and better and more civil service - but they need more grip for it to be recommendable. Avoid.
