The Whitworth has long been an undiscovered gem, but the past twenty years has seen its emergence as a major player on the British art scene. The collections it holds are wonderful, but until the planned extension is built, they are only able to show a very small number of exhibits at any one time. If you want to catch one of the exhibitions, take my advice and plan your visit carefully to make sure it doesn't coincide with any of the other activities which take place. If you are unlucky, as we were, you might find your visit "enhanced" by music and movement for the under-5's on one half of the ground floor and dance and drama for juniors on the other.
