Owner description: From our historical collections to international contemporary art, we aim to bring fresh perspectives, encourage conversation and spark debate. Explore our collections of fine art, spanning six centuries and including many major modern and contemporary pieces. We are famous for 19th century British paintings, particularly our outstanding collection of Pre-Raphaelite works. Our decorative arts collections showcase the artistry, tastes and techniques of every era and culture, from ancient civilizations to today’s designer makers. Our collections of ceramics, silver, glass, furniture and costume are especially fine. We constantly renew and update our collections displays so you should discover something new every time you visit. And, we're free to visit!

It's good selection of artists and styles of art and it's free for most of the collections why not visit and and expand your horizons

Very interesting space, with the newer part connecting to the older. Some rooms interested me less, or seemed slightly out of place, but great to see Lowry paintings, and discover Vallette who adopted Manchester. Lovely cafe, and wonderful to have a resource such as this with free admission.

Having lived and worked in Manchester for over 50 years, this was our first visit to the art gallery, and we should be ashamed.
Excellent collection of local artists works, from the 16th century through to Lowry & Valette along with fine examples by Stubbs and Reynolds.

I found the gallery very interesting. There are a lot of works by local artists from Manchester and the north of England. These pieces give a good coverage of life in the region over the last 300yrs. There is a room if Scottish art too. I was impressed that there is no admission charge but simply a box for donations. We visited at lunchtime on a weekday. There were plenty of visitors but it wasn’t crowded. I’m sure there would have been less visitors if there was anything but a nominal fee. It’s great to see access bring made so available. There is a cafe on site. I think there was only table service available and we were in a bit of a hurry by then and didn’t know how fast or slow the service would be. Pity. The menu looked nice but we went across the road to Cafe Nero instead got a quick bite. Next time I’ll allow more time for a relaxing lunch.

Thank manzag

Enjoyed the Asian exhibits at the Manchester Art Gallery. The building itself is absolutely beautiful. Didn't think the maps were particularly helpful to this first-time visitor, but I still got to see a good deal of the exhibits and enjoyed my time there.
