We were severely mislead by the entry on the Alistair Sawday website which stated that this property was "located at the corner of a quiet street .....". The traffic noise was appalling during day and most of the night for the 5 days we stayed there. In addition, the bar next door had very loud live music on the Thursday & Friday nights which went on into the early morning hours. (We enjoy live music but this was out of key, out of time and far too loud!). On the Friday night/Saturday morning, there was a lot of shouting and yelling, bottle throwing and eventually the police arrived to calm things down. By then, we were on a count-down to leaving on the Saturday morning.

Having said all of the above the hotel staff were welcoming, the bedroom clean and comfortable, the continental breakfast good quality and adequete (although you had to let them know each evening if you wanted breakfast the next day). There was only a small internal lounge area to sit which smelt a little musty. There was no outdoor area to relax. The property itself was centrally located within Biarritz and it was within easy walking distance of all the 'tourist' areas/attraction and many good restaurants.

If you have a reduced hearing problem or are deaf, then this is the hotel for you!

Biarritz itself has been taken over mainly by the Surfing fraternity and is not the well heeled resort that it has been noted for in the past.

I loved Maison Garnier!
I have just spent a couple of days in this lovely hotel.
My boyfriend booked it as a surprise for my birthday!
I liked the genuine, friendly staff and the owner or manager (not sure) made our stay most enjoyable. He also managed to get us a car at very short notice.
It has character and personality, it does not feel like a hotel at all.
I got the impression of staying in a friends house...
Continental breakfast is limited but great products and quality.
I liked room number 5 regardless of not having a balcony...
It is very well located, in the city centre and you can walk everywhere.
I hope to be back soon.

Having read the reviews on Tripadvisor, my wife and I spent 2 nights at Maison Garnier, paying €110 per night for B&B. This is more a high quality, 7-roomed B&B rather than a hotel. It’s an attractive old building of character, situated within easy walking distance of the town centre and beach.
However, I wouldn’t recommend our room, No 7, located on the top floor (or numbers 5 & 6 on the same level which I suspect are similar). While our room was clean, comfortable and reasonably spacious, the small dormer window meant that natural light was limited and consequently the interior was somewhat gloomy. Also, the window is set very high up on the wall - the window sill is about 5 feet above the floor level. With a small parapet running outside, this meant that the only view was the balconies of the upper stories of the apartment block directly across the narrow street, or the sky. You’d have to be about 7 feet tall to be able to see any part of the street below, or stand on the chair as I did. The intruding roof supports might be a problem, my wife bumped her head returning from a trip to the loo in the middle of the night.
Continental breakfast is served in a bright and pleasant room, with good quality linen and crockery. Though the selection is fairly limited, the quality is good, including freshly squeezed orange juice. A fridge near the small reception is stocked with free bottled water, a nice touch. There is a small sitting-room area available to guests.
I’m sure that rooms numbered one to four, with full sized windows, are a better bet if your preference is for smaller establishments such as this.

We enjoyed the Maison Garnier and liked the location. I would probably not visit the town again but found no fault with this small holding. The room was spacious and the breakfast was fresh and cheerful.

Stayed at Maison Gambetta for 5 nights as base to visit Biarritz, St. Jean de Luz, and interior Pays Basque villages.Great location on Rue Gambetta.A 5 to 10 minute walk from everything--beaches, Centre-Ville, restaurants, shopping. Hotel rooms are spotlessly clean and adequately furnished..The owner(Yves Gelot),his wife and small staff are gracious, hospitable, and helpful .You must appreciate small intimate hotels (7 rooms) with a more homelike ambiance, but overall, in my opinion, Maison Gambetta is well worth your visit and is a great price/value find. We were a group of six; my wife and I; our two chidren (aged 6 and 8) and my wifes parents. So not an altogether easy travelling group! BUT, Maison Garnier wasa good place to chill out; very close to everything that you would want to do in Biarritz, like the beach!! But also close to the Market Place (just around the corner) and close to shopping.
The rooms were good, clean and a decent size. The staff were helpful and friendly. The breakfast was as one would expect in terms of a Continental Breakfast, and there is no implied criticism in that comment. The place felt intimate and not like a hotel at all.
The only criticism (and one that will be alleviated soon, I believe, or if you had a room on the 2nd etage) was the lack of aircon. During our stay it was HOT, HOT and HOT. But it was a heatwave after all.

But overall a good place to stay; and we would return, which is enough in itself!!!

Feels like you are staying in a lovely old house rather than a big grotty hotel. People working there were very friendly. The room was tastefully decorated and a decent size with a nice big bathroom. Very central and a short walk to the beaches. Couldn't recommend it enough. Do yourself a favour... stay at the Maison Garnier.
