We went for an evening meal during an overnight stop in Chinon based on the trip advisor reviews we had read. We weren't disappointed, it's well worthy of its place in the top 4!

To start with, the surroundings were lovely. The design has been well thought out and the restaurant has a modern feel but retains a French charm.

We had two adult meals and a children's meal. All were lovely and my son loved his steak, so nice to have a nice child's meal. There were lots of lovely touches too, such as tapenade with our aperitif, and bread readily replaced once it was eaten.

The service was good and always with a smile. Run by a husband and wife (he's the chef, she's front of house) and they obviously care a great deal about their business.

This was a great find...booked only half an hour before arrival, we were able to have an outside table. The couple who run it are a fabulous team..She's the maitre'd and made us feel very welcome. He's the chef and very talented too. The meal we had was outstanding, very well cooked, excellent ingredients, beautifully presented and generous portions. We are taking our time travelling through France and this has been by a long way the best meal. It's a real find in the old heart of this lovely town close to the river. Very highly recommended and worth a detour to eat here.

Not having reserved, we were lucky to sneak in and grab the last table. The restaurant is obviously popular and well patronised. Excellent, efficient and friendly service in a variety of different languages. A good range of dishes using locally ingredients, carefully prepared and beautifully presented. Various 'menu' options which offer the best value. The 'souris d'agneau' turned out to be a huge lamb shank, served in in a rich garlic and rosemary jus. Desserts were superb - the cafe gourmand had a lovely selection and the strawberry and ice cream with Vouvray poured over it was delicious. Unfortunately, we were only passing through Chinon, or we'd have gone back to this excellent restaurant.

The L'Ardoise is a lovely, intimate restaurant with a small but varied menu (~28EUR for 3 courses, although you can order a la carte, if you are less hungry.) Those of you confused by the prior divergent reviews should note that this restaurant appeals to different types. If you are the sort of person who photographs each course then uses social media to post the progress of your meal with tags like #SeeMeEatBetterThanU) then this is a must stop, and you'll have plenty of time to compose your thoughts during the long wait between courses. If you care less about how your food is plated, then it all seems a bit overdone. (The desserts are definitely worth the price of admission, perhaps just a la carte.)
