“A lovely hotel with a couple of caveats”
Reviewed 31 January 2012

We were very pleased with our stay at the Citizen and would return, although we'd probably stay in a cheaper room. The best thing about the hotel is the superb staff, who are earnest and eager to help you. In our experience, such service is relatively uncommon in Paris!

Our room (a more expensive Zen suite) was spacious and thoughtfully un-froufrou. Great bed with duvet, good pillows. Nice bathroom. Overall the design is smart, except for the slightly peculiar, modular, window banquette, which is uncomfortable and can get in the way of closing the curtains. There were lots of windows. It's worth bearing in mind that the hotel is located near a crossroads and that the traffic can be noisy, meaning you don't actually want to open the room windows if you want some quiet. (Perhaps this is less of a problem on higher floors.) The only real disappointment was the included breakfast, but we might be pickier than most people -- in our opinion, since there are many great bakeries in Paris, a hotel could offer really good, fresh pastries and bread.

In terms of location, the hotel is a decent walk away from some of the more exciting restaurants clustered in the 11th but very close to everything by metro.

My husband and I and 2 teenage boys stayed for 3 nights in the apartment which is a city room and suite combined. We have been to Paris quite a few times and wanted to experience something local and non touristy. This is the spot. The staff could not have done more, the rooms were really comfortable and well furnished and I have finally had a great shower in Paris.
If you want to see all the sights you are 2 minutes from the Metro.
Free internet and phone calls is a nice touch and the staff are really interesting to chat to.
The canal has a working loch right outside the hotel and it's interesting watching boats go by. You can walk or run along the canal for ages and find cafes and markets easily.
Really great!

Room Tip: All rooms have a view of the canal.

Le Citizen does not have a health club,a bar,a pretentious atmosphere with a cold unfriendly staff .Le Citizen does have wonderfully comfortable beds, thoughtful and beautiful design, and a warm friendly helpful staff. The location is out of a dream. To experience the Canal St Martin first thing in the morning or at the end of a satisfying evening is a poignant reminder that at least for now the city of lights is home.

Room Tip: The City Room is small but really ok for one person.

The hotel is in an excellent location, off the tourist trail, but with many of the main attractions easily accessible on foot or by metro. Turn right and then up the hill and you can walk up to Belleville; authentic Paris, Piaf's birthplace, a bit seedy but interesting. The Hotel du Nord restaurant, just a couple of minutes walk away, has a great atmosphere with reasonable food. Pink Flamingo, just round the corner serves excellent pizza.
As for the hotel itself, our room (number 1, I think) was tiny. We just took hand luggage but still had trouble finding somewhere to put our stuff. It would have been impossible with a large case. However, the bed was very comfortable and the room modern and clean. Our window looked out onto a set of traffic lights by the Canal, and it was a little noisy, but nothing too troublesome. The provision of an Ipad was a nice touch. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Given the size of the room though I think the hotel is a bit overpriced.

Dear Guest,
Thank you very much for your comment. We understand that the room is small and it's good for future clients that you highlight this. We make a big effort to be as clear as possible on the room descriptions so that people will not be disappointed with any of the aspects of the room.
City rooms are compact and functional. We include everything that might be necessary for a good night rest ( high quality mattress and bedding; large shower, small built in closet and coat hanger ).
Our prices reflect not only space but also all of the extras and services we provide to all our guests (some of which you nicely mentioned in your comment).
For those who stay longer and need more space we have the suites that are much more spacious, even though, Paris is always Paris and space is a rare commodity!!!
In response to some clients' comments about the noise and in addition to the sound proofing efforts we have already made, every room is now equipped with complimentary ear plugs.
We hope you will try us again in one of our suites.
