My wife and I came to Paris this year for the first time, very exciting and a bit scary too. We had a number of days in the city but wasn't sure what we could and should see so we decided to hire a guide for two days, we found Christophe and after reading the reviews and his follow up to each of our emails we booked one day for inside the city and the other outside at Fontainebleau, Barbizon and Vaux le Vicomte.
Our first day together Christophe picked us up at the hotel and I think within the hour we were standing front row center at the Mona Lisa listening to Christopher explain the art, it's history and significance to the period as well as the hearts of the Parisian's. We then turned to another painting in the same room and found that our experience was not to just see one of the three jewels of the Louvre (which we did) but also learn more about the history and art of Paris. That day we saw many sites at the Louvre plus traveled to Sainte Chapelle and Montmartre again seeing beautiful pieces of art and culture, my wife and I were not only being shown Paris but we were now talking about it too.
Our second day together we traveled outside the city and found experiences we would have never found without Christophe. We saw Castles without crowds, we saw Chateau's so large and beautiful they infuriated the King (not a wise move) and saw the town of Moret sur Loing where the famous Barbizon school existed. We walked around the house where the early impressionist painters lived and worked off their bills by painting on the walls and furniture to earn their stay, this may be the highlight of our time in France.
On each of our trips and visit's Christophe was able to provide great insight to what we were seeing in relation to the art itself and the time when it was being made. We learned about the Kings and Emperors and when we came upon something to discuss the context of what was happening or who was in charge helped us to understand each piece in context. I do want to stress that these were conversations and not lectures, we did NOT feel as if we were walking around listening to a set of headphones, rather experiencing the days together with Christophe's help.
We treasured our trip to France and feel very fortunate that we had found he as a guide. I hope you have the opportunity to come to France one day and highly recommend spending time with Christophe while you are there.
