The location of the house is in a quieter area of Honfleur, away from the busy centre. The street has bags of character with restaurants and shops at one end and a large car park at Naturospace where we parked during our stay. We always found a space if we had been out for the day but one thing to watch is the upper part of the car park is closed off on Saturday evenings in preparation for a ' car boot sale.'
I'm not sure whether your car would be towed away had you left it overnight on Saturdays.
The house is well equipped and furnished with 3 ensuite bedrooms plus a guest toilet on the first floor. All bathrooms have showers, toilets and wash basins plus a bath on the first floor . There is a spiral staircase, well lit but not suitable for young children, the elderly or infirm.
The dining area has a table and chairs to seat 6 people plus comfortable seating overlooking the small garden.
The arrangements for arrival and departure are well organised but be prepared to pay a security deposit of €750 or €500 in cash but this is returned on day of departure.
Honfleur is a busy but interesting town with lots of choice of restaurants and good quality shops. If we decide to visit in the future I wouldn't hesitate to book the same property for our stay.
La Maison de Colette is a lovely period home that has been update with every modern convenience. Well situated on a narrow lane just of the Vieux Bassin. Easy walking distance to the center of town. A boulangerie, boucherie, cave à vin, and supermarché (Carrefour) all with in a 5-10 minute walking distance, and only a 10 minute drive to the hypermarché (Intermarché) with a few other markets in town as well (Spar and Aldi). Parking was convenient at the Natursopace, just a few minute walk away (large free parking lot). Inside was a wonderful mix of old and new. Many period features are intact but with a modern cuisine, large bedrooms and huge bathrooms (very uncommon for France). Note that there are no bathrooms or WCs on the ground floor, which has the entry, living/dining room, cuisine (kitchen) and an extension on the back with skylights and large French doors giving it a wonderful outdoor feel, extending the living space significantly. The bedrooms and bathrooms are spread out over the next 3 floors with a bedroom and bathroom on each floor as well as a WC on the first level landing. Note that the stairs are not for the faint of heart. It is a fairly narrow spiral staircase that appears to be original. For those with mobility challenges, this is not the apartment for you unfortunately. For those that can negotiate the stairs, this certainly receives a very high recommendation. Remember, bags have to go up AND come down eventually.
There were 4 of us and we were very comfortable. The rooms were comfortable (beds included) and quiet, both room to room as well as to the outside. There is a nicely appointed back patio area with seating … perfect for appetizers and Champagne or even a full meal as the weather cooperates. Honfleur is a perfect base for exploring Normandy, and la maison du Colette is the perfect home in Honfleur.
