“Hotel of choice in La Rochelle”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 November 2011

Agree with fellow reviewer sonofdrake: strongest point of this hotel is location. It's in the city center, old town, old port. Many sites, shops and restaurants nearby.
The staff is uniformly welcoming and helpful. Special commendation for the housekeeping staff. Linens, bedding, and bathroom all impeccable.
Suitable for business or pleasure. I'd recommend it for couples, families, business travelers. Design is modern, described by reviewer Lboro as "austere"; I'd call it "calm".
By French standards, elevator is large and efficient; hallways are well-lit. Think there are handicapped-accessible rooms; the hotel clearly has made efforts to accommodate guests who have limited mobility or eyesight.
WiFi is free and works well. Hotel has a bar and a nice breakfast buffet. Traveling on business, I appreciated being able to have an after-work drink and to have breakfast early (service starts 6:30 am on weekdays).
In walking distance from the train station. There's private parking for guests. I didn't use it but point it out to guests coming by car, because parking is difficult in old town La Rochelle.

First visit? Stay here.
Nothing special nothing bad.....above average.
Leave the hotel and you have 50 restaurants in SHORT walking distance....many dreadful - check the reviews on this site.

First impressions: pleasant setting in a central but quiet location. Reception area: modern, open, light, attractive. Reception staff (Hervé) welcoming, helpful and efficient.
Room: reasonably spacious, but austere. Not a drawer in the place. Had to live out of suitcases. Very limited shelf-space. Furniture: extremely basic. Beds very comfortable. Bedside lights (important for us as readers) excellent. Air conditioning worked well and quietly. Bathroom (from the point of view of two oldies): bath and shower with no grab handles. No anti-slip mat. No hooks or rings for towels. No soap dish in shower. Surface area for bits and pieces (wash bags etc.): very limited.
Safe in room – capacious and very easy to use. Power outlets accept continental and British plugs (nice touch).
Breakfast: very good buffet which included scrambled eggs and bacon.
Wi-fi: free and efficient (British hotels please note).
All in all? A perfectly acceptable place to stay, as long as you can live with the limited room facilities.

Perfectly situated in the old town of La Rochelle. Within five minutes of walking you reach the towers in the harbour, the famous aquarium or Lafayette shopping center.

Very quiet to be so central. Polite and helpful people in the respeption, breakfast was better than usual on a 3 star hotel. The room was nice, the bathroom even better. Cleaning was superb, never been on a cleaner hotel. Sleeping quality was very good, better bed than most 4 star hotels.

All in all we were very satisfied with this hotel and certainly this is the choice if we go back next year.

I stayed in this hotel for five weeks when I was working in La Rochelle. The hotel is in an excellent location. The staff is very friendly. The rooms are extremely clean and new towels are changed every day. Breakfesti is goos, normal French style. There are not many activities in the hotel, but a free Wi-Fi. I really liked staying in this hotel and if I return to La Rochelle for a vacation I will book this one.

Nice small hotel in the very heart of La Rochalle
We choose it because of good location and private parking available..
However our room on the first floor did not have any curtains!! (except some transparent net?) so anybody parking the car could have perfect view on what is happening in our room. Quite uncomfortable..

Our second visit to La Rochelle was preceded by stays at Le Manoir les Minimes in Amboise and Hotel du Pantheon in Paris so the bar is set very high.

Our stay in La Rochelle was short and we chose Hotel St Nicolas based primarily on TripAdvisor reviews. The hotel is a couple blocks from Gare La Rochelle, the Aquarium and the waterfront of the Vieux Port.... great location. Laure and other staff were most helpful and pleasant. We drove to La Rochelle from the Loire Valley and were able to drop our car at Gare La Rochelle and walk to the hotel in under 15 minutes. It was a quick walk the next day to catch a TGV to Paris.

My only knock on the hotel is that it has NO character..... rooms are clean, beds comfortable, WIFI works well, but the hotel resembles a university dorm residence. There are no views. This dimension to the hotel is in stark contrast to the buildings, architecture and history of one of France's oldest cities dating back to the 10th century.

We'd return to Hotel St. Nicolas only if location is an absolute priority and our trip is short. Otherwise, we will do a little more research and find a hotel or B/B with character and charm likely much further from the Vieux Port.

Room Tip: Not sure it matters.
