Many people smoke cigarettes in France, but the owner of Le Bellagio smokes ten times as much! I just wish a reviewer could have mentioned this very important issue in one of their reviews of this hotel.
Upon arrival, which was late afternoon, the owner Bernadette answered the door disheveled and possibly intoxicated. The first thing I noticed was cigarette soot in the crevices of her smoker's mouth. The second thing I noticed was the thick, visible smoke hanging in the air of the entire hotel. Once we reached our room the intense odour of old cigarette smoke permeated the furniture in the room. We were forced to put our clothes in the bathroom and close the door in order to keep them from smelling like smoke. We also had to open all the windows. I was extremely disappointed as I had to try to explain to my daughter that I was so sorry for this, and I did not know of this owner's substance 'problem'.
Another major problem was that although her website claims they have wifi - they don't. I cannot fathom how in this day and age a hotel cannot have wifi. Thankfully we found a restaurant around the corner that offered wifi. Nevertheless, it was inconvenient. Very disappointing.
We stayed that night and the next morning I went downstairs for breakfast. Which was non existent if you don't count the ashes all over the table. I asked for coffee and got the lousy china instead of the 'good china' she was setting up for two other people. I don't know if they lived there or if they were guests. It was quite awkward sitting around the table as nobody introduced themselves. I finally introduced myself and was met with silence. Not too friendly, but maybe they were just badly hungover.
That morning we started looking around Juan les pins for an empty room. Against all odds, as it was during the Cannes Film Festival, we found a room at a non-smoking hotel with wifi for the remainder of our stay, although we still had to stay that night at Le Bellagio. Once we got back that night, again she was inebriated and she was entertaining the people from that morning's breakfast who were also smoking and drinking in the common area. It didn't feel like a hotel, but a saloon.
The next morning we brought our bags down to the entrance and I broke it to her that we were checking out. Although my French is not the best, she seemed to not understand the term 'checking out' for much of the conversation. I finally said, 'We are leaving because of the extreme amount of tobacco smoke. We are getting sick from it'. To my surprise she exclaimed, 'Someone was smoking?! Why didn't you tell me?!' I couldn't believe it! I just responded 'Can I just pay and go?' She billed me much less than expected - 70 euros per night. I guess because she could get shut down if I reported her. Ooops, too late.
Bottom line, if you smoke, this is a great place as you'll easily save on the expense of cigarettes just by taking a couple deep inhales of hotel air. If you don't smoke or suffer from a respiratory condition then please do not stay here!! There, I said it.
Moral of the story, your vices will get you every time - beware of them.
