event the concierge at the intercontinental hotel is helpless. It seems that Marseille paid a lot of money, but the service does indeed simply not work. we stayed one week and NEVER saw one single ferry go back and forth
a joke - don't expect any service - just walk around the vieux port
welcome to marseille - a city with charme but so unorganised and dirty....

Is this ferry boat still running? We visited the Vieux Port every day but never saw it. It would have been useful on very hot days.

Do yourself a favour and take the boat trip out to the nearby Isles. Visit the Chateau des Ifs and continue on for a swim in a lagoon at Ile du Frioul. Good for an afternoon get-away and some relaxation away from the crowds. Don't forget your hat/cream/head ache tabs...cause that sun is hot hot hot.

On a flying visit to Marseille, we were showing friends the harbour. While on board,we were informed by a fisherman that a ferry ride to L'estaque only takes half hour. They leave every hour from Marseille's Old Port, a deep harbour that has been hosting shipping since the Greeks .
The boat pulls out of the harbour and rounds the bend by the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations, a spectacular new space. By the way some of the best views of L'estaque are from the roof of the museum.
As we slowly neared the shore, i felt as if i was entering a painting. The cloudy, dark sky against the pale rocky hills, evoked a landscape by Cezanne. The viaduct painted by Braque stood out against the hillside. The boxy houses now have satellite dishes on their roofs. Kiosks on the main street sell local specialities: chici, fregi, fried dough with a hint of crushed pepper and coated with with coarse sugar, and panisses, chick pea flour fritters.
The back streets were empty except for other tourists doing the hunt in the footsteps of the great artists, and looking a bit disappointed. We sat in the square in front of Cezann's house and watched the sun set, turning the mountains behind Marseille in a reddish pink. Some new buildings block the harbour view. cranes rose high in the industrial port and hulks of vast cruise ships lingered in the blue waters.
Even in 1885 Cezanne stopped painting here because the place was becoming too industrialised, Braque though saw the factories with smokestacks belching sodium and sulpher acid, as an inspiration. Check his canvass out at the Pompidou Centre. I suppose, in the end, the L'estaque of the artists may outshine the L'estaque of life.

It's a short fast ride from one side of the port to the other side. Great opportunity to get some great pics.
