We feel there was more shabby than chic and our room ,although it had a lovely lake view, was shoebox sized and the bathroom tiny - we were on the 3rd floor -no lift - so you could be going up and down all day if you don't plan. We ate at other hotels for dinner and breakfast and they seemed better value.

Room Tip: ask for a low floor

Dear client,

you have chosen a historical monument for your stay and you must have noticed before your arrival that we do not have a lift, as we mention it everywhere. Unfortunately we are not allowed to install one as we would defininetly destroy the exisiting heritage.

But you were able to ask for a room on the first floor (the rooms are actually only on the first and the second floor, the third floor is reserved for the spa only!) already at the booking and also later, once you have checked in!

You are right, some of our lake view rooms are really rather small (20m²), do not forget they used to be the cells of the monks, but they have breathtaking view, high ceiling and the exit to the immense Grand Galery, so you can not feel opressed in it.
Of course you have to be fond of old things - Abbaye will celebrate 1000 years of existance next year, so there are obviously traces of the past here and there

We are surprised that you talk about better value for breakfast and dinner at our neigbourghs without tasting them in Abbaye. Pity, our collegues are probably good, but you should have tried us before comparing. We do ask a certain price, but we also offer more than a good value for it.

We are very disappointed that we did not succeed in satisfying you, especially because you did not give us a chance to do it. Writing about it afterwards, does not help a lot, asking to change a room par example can help definitely!

Kindest regards from sunny Talloires

We stayed at the Abbaye and loved it. It is situated on Lake Annecy in Talloires and the location is superb. It was a lovely old building and the cloister where you check I. Is amazing. The rooms are relatively small but given the age of the building that is to be expected. There are rooms with views over the lake which seem to be most sought after but we had what was called a garden room. We loved it and you could see the lake from our balcony. Excellent restaurant, eating outside in the garden is wonderful. One of the highlights for us was pre dinner drinks on the lake shore in front of the hotel. View was wonderful and we waited for sun to set behind The Roc du Chere before heading in for excellent dinner.

Room Tip: Lake views most expensive, rooms with garden views are great and you can see the lake from the balco...

Dear guest,

it is such a pleasure to read this review!
All the staff of Abbaye is doing its utmost for our clients and we are all very happy when we see our guest satisfied with what we do.

Of course we are blessed by this magnificent setting and even our old beautiful building that limits us sometimes with the restrictions of the Historical Monuments of France makes your stay in Abbaye very special, but I guess it is the people who are working here that give this extra plus point to all.

Thank you for having chosen Abbaye for your stay, please come back if possible, we will be delighted to welcome you here again.

Very best regards

My wife and I are home probably only a month or two during the year. The rest of the time we live in hotel suites in amazing hotels: the Bel Air in L.A., the University Club in New York, Clardge's in London, the Ritz in Paris, the Beau Rivage in Geneva, the Peninsula in Shanghai, etc.
L'Abbaye in Talloires, France is definitely more low key, but it is nevertheless one of our favorite places to stay in the world, and we try to stay there at least two weeks every other year. The location so unique, so much prettier than Lake Geneva or Lake Como. There is no better view, no better light on water and mountains anywhere.
Furthermore, the staff is extremely nice, especially the manager Sylvain, and Madam Kirchner. The half month we stay here is always one of our happiest experiences of the year.
In the 1600s those monks certainly picked the right location. Cezanne certainly painted and loved the beauty of the colors and light, and my fellow Missourian, Mark Twain (who spent as little time on his boyhood soil as I now do), wrote a wonderful description of L'Abbaye, the Lake and of Annecy, that I would love to appropriate. However, I just 'second' his deft description that you can read, if you google "Mark Twain L'Abbaye".
Just experience it for yourself.
No place rejuvenates my spirit more than coming back here. Enjoy!

Dear guest,

we are deeply touched by your report and above all by your loyalty to our beautiful house. You are comparing us with really huge names in hotel industry, but we know that we do not have to be ashamed: we do not compete with their luxury, we try to offer the human touch to the beauty of our setting.

It is always lovely to have you with us, we are awating your arrival as if a member of the family is coming home and I guess this is what makes Abbaye so special: all of you, our loyal clients, that are coming year after year make this old beautiful house feel like a huge home.

I will not be here anymore to greet you in two years again, but I know that the spirit of the house will remain untouched and that you will enjoy your stay again just as Mark Twain did 136 years before.

With warmest regards and best wishes

A warm welcome met us, and the old building was charming. The situation next to the beautiful lake, and a wonderful view combined with employees who really want to help you and make you feel relaxed and pampered made our stay outstanding. The surroundings offers a lot of possibilities for those who want to be active and therefore you must remember to book enough time at this place.

Dear client,

so nice to read that you had a great stay in our venue. We really like what we do and I am glad that you have felt it.

In fact there are so many offers for an active stay in the surroundings that you need to stay for a long time in order to try everything, or of course come again.

We hope this will be your case, we are already looking forward to greeting you in Abbaye again.

Very best regards

We arrived by car from Lago di Come and this lake is much more approachable than Como. Easier to walk around the lake and you can actually swim directly in the clean water. In these beautiful setting you find Abbaye de Talloires with good parking space and located directly at the waterfront. We had reserved a superior room with lake view and got a room on the 3rd floor with magnificent view over the lake. But the room was very tiny and could basically only accommodate a twin bed and cupboard but had a complete new bathroom. Great service and we had a fabulous dinner in the restaurant. Hotel is located in walk distance from loads of other hotels, restaurants and cafes and offered a very beautiful surrounding. The hotel offers a private bridge in the lake with sun chairs and serving and also a very beautiful garden with chairs and outside the entrance a number of tables in the shadows of the big trees where drinks and food are served. Very nice and service minded staff.

Dear guest,

thank you for this kind review. Lake Annecy is definitely a fantastic location, it is the purest lake in Europe and offeres so many sport activities that you always have a difficulty of choice.

Thank you for chosing Abbaye for your stay and thank you for all your compliments. The rooms, especially the ones overlooking the lake, are indeed rather small - please do not forget that they used to be the cells of the monks and that we , being a national monumnt, can not change the structure of the building- but we try to refurbish them in the way that they offer you all the necessary comfort.

We are very happy to read that you loved the food and the service: we pay a lot of attention to these two points as they are so important for the well beiing of our guests.

We would be more than glad to welcome you back in case you will be in our region again.

The staff at this old established abbey hotel are unfailingly polite and helpful but just sometimes things weren't up to scratch. We had to leave early and ordered breakfast but they did not produce any hot food until half an hour after opening so we had to make do with the cold buffet. The receipt for the rebooking said we had paid for dinner but it turned out we hadn't. (It was six months earlier so I could not remember without consulting bank account). Just a minor irritation.

The room was large and comfortable although needed some updating. The plum coloured bathroom ware was 1980s and the gold taps were long turned to dull brass. It ought to be possible to put in a lift in such a large hotel, a bit of a trek up with heavy bags.

The meal was excellent and well served. The food is good. The whole stay is quite expensive but typical of Relais & Chateaux.

Room Tip: Ask for a view of the lake, it is worth the extra.

Dear client,

thank you for having chosen our beautiful venue for your stay!
I wish everything would always go fine and as you know it is very often a Murphy's rule: when it happends, it always happends with one and the same person. Sorry for these faults, we will definitely try to improve.

We refurbish our rooms in continuation, so it can happend that you will have a completely renovated one or one that will be renovated next year or at the latest a year after.
And of course some of the things are left authentical but functional.

Bad news for the lift: there is absolutely no way to install a lift in our house, not inside and even less outside, being a national monument we can not touch to the structure at all.
Our vallets are glad to take care of your lugagge, if they are not present, someone from the reception does it for you.

We are happy to hear that you have enjoyed our restaurant, we have a lot of compliments on the cuisine of our Chef.

For your information, Abbaye was the 5th Realais Châteaux of the history but it does not belong to this chain for over 20 years now, we are Châteaux Hôtels Collection and Esprits de France.

Warmest regards from the bay of Talloires
