Cancelled a 2 night stay in Strasbourg France over complications with Americans obtaining the Sanitaire (French COVID pass). Booked 2 nights in Freiburg instead, about an hour away. The location is right in the middle of the city. It's walking distance to most anything you'd like to see in the center. Driving, mind you can be quite stressful, as is the parking. The staff did assist us with parking our car. You just leave the key with them kind of like a valet service. There are 5 small Prius sized spots just to the right of the hotel. Behind the hotel in an alley or some kind was a strip where employees and other guests can park for the day/night. Check in was a breeze. The very lovely Frau Zimmerman helped us, answered questions, and gave recommendations for dinner. She helped me find a glorious outdoor cafe for Schweinshaxe, which is German roasted pork knuckle. She was very tolerant of our limited German and spoke excellent English. What a doll!!
Our rooms were clean as was the bathroom. Plenty of hot water and the pressure from the shower was good. The bed was on the firm side but that's to be expected just about anywhere. Pretty basic amenities and fixtures but modern. The refrigerator was much appreciated as was the air conditioning unit above the door. I can't for the life of me figure out why so many European hotels allow their guests to roast when units like this can easily be installed. The usual excuse is normally something like "well, this is a historic building unsuitable for central air" or "we won't invest in AC when we only receive a few hot days a year." Central Hotel offers this option and that's one of the biggest reasons we decided to stay here. Hotels without AC were not even considered. There was a little noise coming from outside but what do you expect in the city?
The biggest strength of the hotel by far was the glorious breakfast buffet. With COVlD you are required to wear a plastic glove to prevent contaminating common surfaces and utensils. Great idea!! Excellent coffee, breads, pretzels, cold cuts, cheese, fruit, sausages, eggs, you name it! You do boil the eggs yourself, however. TIP: If you don't see water boiling your egg will not cook properly. Someone can assist you in turning up the temperature. I can't tell you how much we enjoyed our breakfasts. The other 2 hotels we stayed at paled in comparison so this really set the bar high for our time in Europe.
Overall a very enjoyable stay. Friendly staff, comfortable hotel, on-site parking, clean bathrooms, comfy bed, delicious breakfast, fridge, AC etc. Would DEFINITELY stay here again.
