Not as Expected

2.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Jun 29, 2022
Our experience seems to be at odds with others, so we were perhaps just unfortunate, but I am remain surprised by the rating and reviews of this hotel.
I would open by stating that the two ladies on reception during the day were very good at attending to our needs, including rectifying some problems we experienced. I would also add that the water was hot and that the room was large and well styled (not so the bathroom which was extremenly small), and finally that the location is central, albeit not the prettiest being opposite a car park and next to a large supermarket.
However, this was one of the most disappointing stays we have ever had, particularly for a 4 star hotel, which leaves me very surprised at the rating.
The two stand out disappointments were due to staff. On returning one evening after dinner, we found that one of the duvets was not clean and had flecks of brown, plastic like deposits on it (I subsequently found the same on the remaining duvet a day or two later, so this must be due to the cleaning process). On going down to speak to reception, the gentleman apologised and appeared at the room 10 minutes later, but only with a replacement duvet cover which we would be required to fit to the duvet. We were surprised that we were being asked to replace a dirty duvet cover ourselves rather than just being given a complete replacement duvet to put on the bed. However, I was more surprised with how stressed and agitated the gentleman got when I pointed this out, whereupon he raced off, returning several minutes later with the said replacement single duvet fitted with a clean duvet cover, still stressed and agitated, telling me that he'd had to block out another room as a result, heavily implying that this was my fault. It was bizarre. Of course he now had the dirty duvet cover on the duvet passed back to him, together with the clean duvet cover he had brought to the room, which would have allowed him to replace the clean duvet in the room apparently blocked out. His tone also became somewhat sarcastic and it was most unsettling. Thankfully we did not encounter him again.
We also received poor service at breakfast on our first morning, We arrived to find most of the tables were free, but they had not been cleaned. The two staff seated us at a dirty table of four, next to each other on the clean side of the table. Again, really poor service. This also followed a morning in the room where we had been kept awake by dogs whining in a nearby room for over an hour. That's the first time I've ever experienced this in a hotel, where guests have pets in their rooms which disturb others. The guest had left the dogs in the room and they were whining for their owner. As a result, we complained to reception and were told the lady with the dogs was checking out that morning, and we also had a table reserved for us the next morning.
There were two occasions where needed to call down for things to be replaced in the room which had not been done by room service. the first time house-keeping appears within a few minutes which was great. The second time, despite mentioning to reception before we headed out for the evening, when we retuned tissues had not been replenished. When next at reception, I enquired about this and the tissues had been left in the pigeon hole for the room behind reception, and I was duly given them to take to the room and fit into the on wall dispenser myself. Again, we'd never encountered this before.
Overall, a really, really poor experience.

Spent 3 nights here in September and was completely happy with the choice I made.
The room and bathroom size were good for Europe and we certainly didn't feel cramped. The bed was very comfortable and all the amenities we would need were provided. The ladies at the front desk were all very friendly and were more than happy giving recommendations of places to eat or drink nearby. The buffet breakfast was very tasty and had plenty of variety.
There was a very small (4 cars?) parking area out front of the hotel, but there is also an underground parking lot below the hotel for a rate of about 13 euros a day. The entrance is in another street which can be a bit tricky finding first time around, just because of the one way system and pedestrian areas. But was fine after that.
The location is right next to one of the main roads in the old part of the city and everywhere is pretty much no more than a 10 minute away.
I was very pleased with this hotel and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone heading to Freiburg.

Cancelled a 2 night stay in Strasbourg France over complications with Americans obtaining the Sanitaire (French COVID pass). Booked 2 nights in Freiburg instead, about an hour away. The location is right in the middle of the city. It's walking distance to most anything you'd like to see in the center. Driving, mind you can be quite stressful, as is the parking. The staff did assist us with parking our car. You just leave the key with them kind of like a valet service. There are 5 small Prius sized spots just to the right of the hotel. Behind the hotel in an alley or some kind was a strip where employees and other guests can park for the day/night. Check in was a breeze. The very lovely Frau Zimmerman helped us, answered questions, and gave recommendations for dinner. She helped me find a glorious outdoor cafe for Schweinshaxe, which is German roasted pork knuckle. She was very tolerant of our limited German and spoke excellent English. What a doll!!

Our rooms were clean as was the bathroom. Plenty of hot water and the pressure from the shower was good. The bed was on the firm side but that's to be expected just about anywhere. Pretty basic amenities and fixtures but modern. The refrigerator was much appreciated as was the air conditioning unit above the door. I can't for the life of me figure out why so many European hotels allow their guests to roast when units like this can easily be installed. The usual excuse is normally something like "well, this is a historic building unsuitable for central air" or "we won't invest in AC when we only receive a few hot days a year." Central Hotel offers this option and that's one of the biggest reasons we decided to stay here. Hotels without AC were not even considered. There was a little noise coming from outside but what do you expect in the city?

The biggest strength of the hotel by far was the glorious breakfast buffet. With COVlD you are required to wear a plastic glove to prevent contaminating common surfaces and utensils. Great idea!! Excellent coffee, breads, pretzels, cold cuts, cheese, fruit, sausages, eggs, you name it! You do boil the eggs yourself, however. TIP: If you don't see water boiling your egg will not cook properly. Someone can assist you in turning up the temperature. I can't tell you how much we enjoyed our breakfasts. The other 2 hotels we stayed at paled in comparison so this really set the bar high for our time in Europe.

Overall a very enjoyable stay. Friendly staff, comfortable hotel, on-site parking, clean bathrooms, comfy bed, delicious breakfast, fridge, AC etc. Would DEFINITELY stay here again.

The Central Hotel in Freiburg im Breisgau has a perfect location. It is easy to get to from the motorway system, has a good parking garage (with a charging point for electric cars), and is right in the centre of the old city. Warm welcome, good breakfast, and a fantastic base for walking about this beautiful city. Full of interesting architecture (from the 1300s and modern), full of water (fountains, rivers), and very friendly.
