We stayed at this Sheraton property for four days and three nights. It is located a stone's thrown from the Hauptbahnhof (Central Rail Sation). When you approach the property you see the sign on the building that says five stars or superior. As this review details, that is a bit of a stretch.
The lobby is bright and airy and check-in was very efficient. We were first given a fairly small room with two beds that were so hard you could have bounced a quarter off of the mattress. At my request, we got a room on the same floor which was bigger and were the bed was slightly better. The hotel has four elevators, so there was never a wait to go down to the lobby.
We had the hotel breakfast buffet each morning and we agree with the other reviews that it is very solid. There is a nice selection of juices, teas, rolls, fresh meats and cheeses and breakfast cereals. Also, there is an egg/omelet station and the chef fixing the eggs was very friendly and brought them to the table when they were ready. We also ate in the restaurant one night and the menu, while limited, was good. My girlfirend had the sliced duck and I had the Wiener Schnitzel (veal). Service was attentive and yet unobtrusive.
The hotel has a "spa" on the eighth floor and we each splurged for a treatment. The spa is run by an outside company and while the pricing is reasonable, the experience was average. There really is no waiting area before you go into the treatment room(s) and afterward you share the "cool down" area with those guests using the steam room, sauna or whirlpool (there is no pool). Furthermore, there are only six chairs to relax on, so if it is busy ...good luck.
The lobby has five or six computer terminals that allow you to access the internet. The front desk will give you a code for the first free hour and then there is a charge after that if you want unlimited use. There is a small table by the bar which has free daily newspapers in both English and German. Overall, the front desk staff was friendly but not overly attentive and a tad standoffish at times when we had what I considered simple requests.
In summary, the hotel is solid but when you think five stars in the US you expect something slightly more elevated. As an example, there was no one to really help with the bags and when we asked if they can help us get the two blocks to the train station (we had three bulky bags and no cab will travel that distance), we were told "sorry, we don't offer that service." Hard to believe that we were the only ones to ever make that request. We also heard a guest at check-out mention that the maid had removed his computer cable wheile cleaning the room (on the date he was checking out) and instead of first checking with her, they argued with him for 5 minutes telling him that she would not do this as it would violate policy. Guess what? When they finally checked, he was right and she had indeed done so as she thought the room was vacant. These two small examples are a flavor of why this really is not a 5 star property. Nonetheless, the location is ideal, the food is solid and with the right rate it is a good choice.
