Owner description: The German Historical Museum presents itself in two buildings: In the unique Baroque Zeughaus and the neighbouring modern exhibition hall designed by the Chinese-American architect Ioeh Minh Pei. The 300-year old Zeughaus is one of the most important buildings of the Baroque period in Berlin and the oldest buildings at the boulevard Unter den Linden. In 2006 the Permanent Exhibition “German History in Images and Artefacts” was inaugurated here; it showcases 2000 years of eventful and enthralling German history as seen within its European context. 8000 selected objects from the extensive collections of the German Historical Museum furnish valuable evidence of history and reveal, on a surface area of 8000 square meters, a fascinating and vivid picture of the past. Supplementing the Permanent Exhibition are specialized temporary exhibitions displayed in the fascinating exhibition building designed by I.M. Pei. The spacious new structure with its glass and steel entrance lobby and distinctive winding staircase was opened in 2003. Definitive events and facets of German history are presented in a variety of special exhibitions on the four floors of the new building.

“Expansive Look at German History”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 April 2012

I visited this museum per the recommendation of our Original Berlin Walks guide. The museum gives a very comprehensive look at the history of Deutschland from the early Roman and Germanic settlements to present day.

It was a very big museum with information on many aspects of German History. Good if you are really interested in history and culture. The English audio guide was useful

“worthwhile museum”

We did Pegamon museum etc 8 years ago so went here this time. Very very detailed, exhaustive journey through German history. You need to be selective or have several hours to do it justice.

“FIVE STARS if you like History”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 March 2012

This place compares to a mini version of the Smithsonian in Washington DC. It was absolutely fantastic. The artifacts wil send shivers up your spine. If you are only in Berlin for one or two days and know you can not see everything, go here. Carve out at least three hours so you dont feel rushed. You will love reading all the english captions.

What I enjoyed the most is how it had more history then just the Nazi era. It started with the Celtic people.

This place is like a whole semester of History right before your eyes. It will be jaw dropping and eye opening.

The lighting was not the best, and the layout was strange, but the exhibits, art, and details were amazing.

There will be items that resonate with you. I really like the empty Cyanide cans used for the ovens. I also loved the German dolls.

This is a must see in Berlin!!!
