The Dark Hostel (website http://www.hostels.com/hostels/berlin/dark-hostel/24067") was something of a surprise. The place is run by the same people who run a heavy metal rock club accross the way. We thought it might be a bit loud when the music started but no. It was fine. We never actually went to see what the club was like but often saw punks and goths and other exotically dressed youth making their way to it in or from it. All incredibly well behaved!!! Incredible. We obtained the key and kept it for the duration of our stay. The hostel is like a block of flats but we never saw anyone else in the place. There were two other rooms coming off the corridor on our floor but there was no one in them except for one night, the occupants were a bit noisy but that was it. There is a communal kitchen area with cups and plates and a kettle and fridge but no cooking facilities. The place is clean though the communal shower (you can lock the door!) tends to leak outside of its designated area but then it is a hostel so be prepared to look after yourself.

The hostel is located in the old east Berlin which is a bit run-down-looking. There is graffiti everywhere. Every surface that can be decorated is decorated. But the place is peaceful and orderly and the hostel is five minutes from the metro and trams and busses cafes bars, fast food, bakers, frutiers, and a shopping emporium. There is a whole restaurant district twenty minutes away. We loved being there and spent our days walking and riding the trams and busses. they take you everywhere and you get a really good look at the place. And of course the highlight of our visit was the State Opera's production of Tristan und Isolde: Fantastic!!!!
