“Nice church but not worth the entrance fee”

Unusual entrance from the Alter Markt square, not through the impressive door on the side. The church is sort of built into the town hall. Looks like a small white church, but you come into a musuem shop where you pay the entrance fee before entering the actual church. Pretty colors, but quite an average experience.

This is a brilliant place to pass away an hour if your are into church architecture. Be sure to read the information board outside with details of the lightening strike.

A visit to this historic church will, at least might,... enlighten and/or enrich any visitor's
visual or mental impressions whether religiously inclined or not.
There's a lot to see, a lot to learn about things we, generally, do not often think about.
In any event, it was a memorable visit and rather delightful to spend the time in
this church, by whose 'sacred' atmosphere one seemed surrounded, also enjoying its
cooler airs on a hot day outside.

A very nice church with plenty of details to study. Enjoyed the Seven deadly sins on the top part of the wooden crenelation of the altar area. Not easy to spot and the postcard which shows the carvings are a collage of pictures. Look up when you are looking at the carving of the hunters from Novgorod. Also - don't miss the carving of a man with a club threatening to knock down all trespassers to the shop owners benches in the church. So much for the Christian non-violence policy...

Quite amazing! This is the oldest church in Stralsund and was started in 1234! Having seen a few large churches on this trip, this one was a real surprise. It is in the middle of a restoration both inside and outside and the paintings and murals etc are being given a spruce up to return them to their original colours. The work done so far is brilliant. When finished it will make the place more amazing. Inside there are an amazing collection of medieval paintings, carvings and altars. If you come here it should be number one on your list. The entry is €6 per couple and you also get a free guide in English!
