“Excellent little authentic hotel in Dusseldorf!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 July 2011

Hotel Acon was a treat to stay at - the staff are extremely helpful and friendly and I could not fault them on any level! The location is ideal for the train station and the shops are walking distance. The rooms are basic but extremely well kept and most importantly clean!!! This is a little gem for the price you pay!! :-)

Me and my friends came to stay here for one night and we were not expecting anything great at such a cheap price. We were pleasantly surprised when we were greeted by the most charming man who allowed for a smooth check in. We got to our rooms which although slightly dated, were more than adequate and extremely clean. We did not eat in the hotel but we enjoyed drinks at the bar where the manager was very helpful and attentive. I would highly recommend this hotel especially for those needing to be close to the central station!

Budget-minded travellers will appreciate this hotel. This is one of those inexpensive German hotels that offer a proper and fairly decent hotel experience.

It's a short walk (350 m) from the central station.

In the other direction, there is a Kaufhalle and McDonalds about a block down and a little further on one hits the glitz of the Ko Gallerie and the Koningsallee. The Altstadt and the main shopping street on the Schadowstrasse is within walking distance beyond that. Alternatively you can get there directly by taking the underground from from the Hauptbahnhof.

It's only about 150 metres away from Mercure and Intercity chain hotels so it's not really in a bad area. It's not a restaurant-rich area, but we found a few dining options near the hotel, including Thai and Vietnamese places. There are also a number of fast food places in the train station.

The reception staff were friendly and helpful. Someone is there 24 hours a day.

The room was spacious, quiet and comfortable. We had one of the rooms at the back with a balcony. Plenty of closets.

The breakfast buffet had a selection of cheeses and cold cuts. Boiled eggs. Yoghurt cups. Juice. Rolls and bread. Fruit cocktail (on Sunday). Coffee was good.

The people staying at the hotel (on a pre-Xmas weekend) were mainly middle-class-looking couples and families.

You're probably checking out this hotel because you've found a good price. You're wondering why the price is so good. Three main reasons: the location, the room and the breakfast.

The first reason: The street is residential (ie 5 storey German-style urban residential), but there are a few establishments on the street that detract from its tone. It seemed quite safe however and it's all low key.

The second reason is the room. It's due for renovation. The decor is functional in that way that you see in German hotels. The carpet has seen better days. The decor in the large bathroom was (I think) from the 1970s. Not a lot of shelf room.

The third reason is the breakfast. It was nice enough, but it was pretty well the minimum that a three-star hotel can get away with.

A particular problem for us was the weak and wonky wifi. The transmitters are on the 1st and 3rd floors but it didn't help. We chose this hotel partly because of the free wifi, so we found this rather annoying.

The TV had only one English station: CNN. No BVN despite the many Dutch people staying at the hotel.

In summary, we had a good weekend while staying here and really appreciated the price.

The hotel is within a close walking distance from the Düsseldorf central train station, so it suited us perfectly. It is also not too far from the Altstadt. The neighborhood does appear somewhat dodgy with a sex shop and night clubs, but was quiet and safe even when we walked back late at night.

Check-in and check-out was very quick and easy. The staff was very helpful and spoke excellent English. The hotel was basic, but very clean and the only thing that bothered us was the stale air in the room. Otherwise our triple room was quiet and spacious. The room seemed a bit cold at first but it was easily fixed by adjusting the heating. Breakfast was included in the price and was ok.

Hotel Acon was surprisingly good. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and were multilingual which was great for us. It was pretty cheap at 65 euro per night, our room was spacious and sunny and had everything that we needed. The hotel was handy to the train station, although it was in a street that seemed a bit dodgy with three or four nudie bars, and I'm not sure that I would have felt comfortable walking around the area on my own at night. The decor was a little dated, but we wanted for nothing when it came to amenities - including free wi-fi - which was an added bonus.

Being a railway enthusiast, I found this hotel to be an ideal location for both local tram and distant train travel. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful, including serving coffee at our early departure time of 2.30 am. The room was spacious, clean and quiet, the beds comfortable, and although we slept on the street side, the double-glazing baffled out the sound of tram and road traffic. The only street disturbance was the honking of horns when Germany won their game in the World Cup - that was just an unfortunate exception! LOL The breakfast was good and more than adequate.
