Zollverein is a great place to get close to the industrial history of the Ruhr area. There are interesting museums and recommended tours that focus on different aspects of the work done here. The view from the top of Kohlenwäsche brings more interesting insights. Also there is decent gastronomy: Enjoy a couple of excellent local Pilsener beers Stauder from tap at the Zollverein Casino Restaurant&Bar after your visit...

The 'Über Kohle und Kumpel' (about coal and miners) guided tour is excellent. I had to go on a guided tour in German but on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays they have guided tours in English. During the tour, the guide explained all the processes involved in sorting and washing the coal they got from the mine. I thought it was really clever that they had animations projected onto the sides of the machineries so you can understand how each step works. They also let us touch some of the tools the miners used to mine coal. The site is well preserved and even if you are not on the tour, you can get close to all the machines. The whole tour lasts for 2 hours and costs 9.5 euros. The Ruhr museum's permanent exhibition explains the history and culture in the Ruhrgebiet. The displays are in both German and English. It's also interesting - but I think if you only have limited time in Essen you should do the guided tour as you can get a lot out of it. I also went ice-skating in the ice-skate ring next to the former coking plant - the ice-skate ring itself is very long (I think 150m) and the atmosphere is great.

I didn’t know what to expect from a visit to Zollverein Coal Mine. Arriving at the site was the first surprise; it is physically an amazingly big site. There are original industrial machinery still in place. These are huge engines and helps to understand how Germany as a economic powerhouse was created. The former industrial buildings are turned into museum, restaurants, shop etc. I was told the mines themselves are not open to the public due to safety reasons. I will definitely go back and reserve plenty of time to check out the number of different possibilities more thoroughly- like the ice rink in winter time.

There are not so many attractions in Essen. This one is the best. Check out how the people of this area have worked and lived in the 50s 60s and 70s. Hard stuff.
You can find a nice restaurant here. A little pricey but worth a visit.
