I stayed at the AC Hotel Mainz for a work week while visiting JGU. The staff were unfailingly pleasant and helpful -- my request for an umbrella was effortlessly fulfilled, as were all my requests. The staff really is top-notch.
We got an upgrade (Marriott Rewards), and the deluxe room was nice. I would consider it somewhat small for a "deluxe" room, even by European standards, but the bathroom was a very nice size indeed. The bed was quite comfortable. The in-room refrigerator was a terrific feature that is not-so common in European hotels.
The hotel could not be easier to get to with its location directly facing the train station. You also have the city and the region at your doorstep, as the transport hub in front of the station has tons of trams and buses. This convenience comes at a minor price, however: You are right on top of the train station, and this is a hub of activity almost 24 hours a day. If you are sensitive to noise, this might not be the hotel for you. The windows are pretty good at keeping noise out, but if you want to crack them at night, you will have a constant supply of noise (sometimes, the noise is quite calamitous, even very late). I don't think this should be a deal-breaker for most people, but those who know they need a very quiet environment should be forewarned.More
