My husband and I stayed here during Christmas week 2015. It was our first time in Málaga and Hotel Del Pintor played a large part in making our stay wonderful. We loved it and look forward to returning one day!
Positive points:
-A non-smoking hotel. This was important to us because the amount of public smoke in Spain in general has been a little overwhelming.
-Excellent location to historic city center (5-10 min walk to most places: Calle Larios, many restaurants, shops, cafes, Plaza de la Constitución where music performances are often held, at least during the holidays). 2 minute walk to Teatro Cervantes, Picasso birth-house museum and Mercado de la Merced.
(Even though the hotel is very centrally located, it still is a little bit away from all of the crowds and noise to make it a tranquil place to come back to rest in the middle or at the end of the day. I loved this part about the hotel.)
-Close proximity to lots of restaurants (more than plenty to choose from), many only a 2 minute walk away. A few we went to that were very close were Tapeo de Cervantes (awesome service and food), Vino Mio (great Sangría) and Noviembre (the hotel's restaurant across the street - wonderful food, service and unique/trendy décor…breakfast until 12:30pm!). The hotel is also close to the pier and beach (La Malegueta)...about a 25 minute walk if you want the scenic route or a 15 minute walk if you want to get there fast.
-Quiet Room: Calle Alamos (street the hotel faces) is a busy one-way street, but we asked for a quiet room with light and we were given one of the interior rooms that faces the partially covered atrium. It was perfect - there was only our room and 1 other room on the interior side of the hotel. We could open our window to hear the relaxing water fountain that flowed during the day and let in some soft light. I am a very light sleeper, but noise was not a problem with the addition of some earplugs (which I bring on all my hotel stays). A few mornings we had some inconsiderate neighbors who spoke loud and let the door slam several times, but that is something you can experience in any hotel. As far as the hotel goes, they gave us a very quiet and peaceful room away from the elevator and stairs, for which I am thankful.
-Clean room and bathroom. Nice details such as a generous toiletry tray and bamboo plant in the bathroom + the bath/shower combo has awesome hot water and pressure. Personal touches in the form of a welcome note with a few candies and an origami bird; since we were there on Christmas day, they also left a Merry Christmas note in our room with a few ginger cookies. Free large glass bottle of water with cups in the room and the window had 3 types of curtains: sheer, privacy and black-out curtains. There was also a small TV, a desk, clothes hangers, suitcase stand and a safe in the room.
-Staff: Wonderfully nice, patient and helpful! The person at the 24 hour Reception Desk always greets you when you walk in the door and gave us suggestions for places to eat and directions to any place we asked about. I even ran into one of the ladies who tidies up the room and she was very friendly also. Small breakfast room service available with advanced notice.
-Lobby: Free Nespresso machine coffee and bag tea with hot water kettle that you can take to go or enjoy taking a break at one of the tables. (Other drinks and snacks available at a cost). They provide a few magazines, newspapers and art books to browse through or you can watch the TV above the reception desk and listen to the music playing in the lobby. They post the weather for the next 7 days above the drink station too. There is a public computer that is for guest use also. We didn't use it as we had our own and there is WiFi in the rooms.
-Information: The lobby has a book with pamphlets on many different restaurants and activities (e.g. flamenco shows) and the hotel even offers a free walking tour by reservation. In the atrium, there are 2 bikes you can rent, a small coupon stand for a few Euros off museum entrances and certain restaurants and there is also a large stand with many brochures for places to see in the area and suggestions for day trips.
Items to Improve:
-Beds could be a little more plush or maybe they could put a mattress topper on the top. I could feel the springs when I turned, but I am very sensitive to these types of things (didn't bother my husband). Maybe the beds in the other rooms are better?
-Shower curtain and blanket on one bed had a few light stains - that's the downside of white, it can still show everything even when it has been cleaned.
-Even with these 2 negative points, I would still return as the other many positive points by far outweighed the negative.
Thank you Hotel Del Pintor!
