“Middle of nowhere, unsafe location at night”

The location of this hotel is poor, it's a long walk to anything of interest and walking in this area once it gets dark is not recommended. Youths hanging around the nearby streets, especially near the rail station. Transport is non-existent too so you'd better be a fit and good walker.

I have just returned from the riu bel playa with a group of 18. Being a travel agent I get the chance to visit many destinations/hotels throughout the world. I have to say that the service at this hotel from both management and staff was excellent. Nothing was too much bother and the happy pleasing attitude of all was exceptional. The meals were varied and of a high standard and all inclusive drinks went down well!!!! Thanks to all the bar staff!!! Carmen on reception should be given an accolade for all her hard work and the most cheerful disposition. The location was great with lovely walks along to Benalmadena. I would recommend this hotel to any of my clients and I am sure it will not be my last visit. Hats off the the fantastic Riu Bel Playa and the Riu chain of hotels who have never disappointed me.

We took my youngest daughter for a long weekend to this hotel.First until November it is not a Riu hotel thats when its taken over by the chain.I travel a lot so do my best to be fair to hotels as it is their livelyhood, when we arrived our room was ready which was on the first floor facing the pool which means the sun all day, room was clean also safety deposit box is free with a 10 euro deposit, but down by the pool there was building works covered by green tarpollen but it was the tiles/paving stones that were being replaced, also the first floor roof was getting repair work/upgraded so it was waterproof. As we were only there for the weekend although not impressed about not being warned in advance we decided to lump it.As the title suggests the work was finished on Saturday afternoon but i dont know if more is planned.Breakfast was quite manic most of the guests are half board so it was very busy the usual fare fried eggs bacon sausages ect the food was fine the coffee was rotten! it all comes out at 07.45 you dont get it then by 09.00 its only warm it wasnt replaced, the tea was a better deal as it was help yourself.Lunch was more relaxed only around 30 all-inclusive guests (including ourselves) sampled what was exellent food a good choice and hot with attentive staff* (remember this bit *).Now dinner was very busy food again was good although you had to wait for some things due to volume of customers, it appears all French, German some Dutch and Scandinavian were half board so through no fault of theirs the waiters*(remember this bit) were all over them they couldnt do enough for them,WHY? They are paying customers for drinks and where there is payment they are tips. Its reminded me of around ten years ago when all inclusive first arrived if you had a bracelet on you were deffinetly treated worse than the half board customers. Its was the same at the lounge one serving the all- inclusive customers but two taking orders at their seats for the half board customers again i stress its not the customers fault. This should change in november when Riu make it all-inclusive.As usual it is local brands but the strawberry daiquiri i could of given to my six year old it was pop with no alcohol in it what so ever.I caught up with the Thomson rep on Saturday i voiced my concerns regarding the building work she assured me there would be none on that day -Wrong! but if we werent happy we could use the Riu Hotel next door you only got this information if you complained holidaymakers there for two weeks were unaware of this arrangement. As ive stated once the building works done that should rid that problem. The pool was clean but due to the time of year it was freezing i tried to go in but i feared a heart attack (cant blame the hotel for that). But heres one for families coming in the summer from the hotels leaflet i quote " It is forbiden to use inflateable ball and matress ,googles, snorkles and those type of things."(the grammer and spelling is as on leaflet) as there is a lifeguard i can see a lot of grief in the summer months. We tried to order a pizza at around 10p.m and were told at reception they dont do meals to the room only later we found out you have to order it from the bar - a lost sale.I always finish a review with this would i come back YES but in Summer 2013 when its a Riu Hotel

Room Tip: Get a room facing the pool you get the sun all day

Just returned today (15th March) and would definately recommend for a nice relaxing holiday. Reception very friendly, we checked in and were in our room within about 5 minutes. Room on 3rd floor overlooking the pool, sunshine on the balcony most of the day.
Hotel was spotless, our room was cleaned everyday and smelt lovely when we returned. Food was good with wide variety, I doubt anyone could go hungry but as with most all inclusives, food was not always at hot as we would have liked.
No problem with getting a table in the restuarant or a seat in the bar as hotel was not busy, I think it would be a problem though in high season. Although the temperature outside was in the 70-80's, the hotel inside felt rather chilly, take a jacket or cardigan - room was cold even with heating on.
Pool area with over 200 sunbeds. Large sun terrace which caught the sun, nice place to sit and sip a cool drink. Short walk to the beach, near enough to walk to bars and resturants.
Give it a try, I'm sure you will like it.

Room Tip: If you want sunshine on your balcony, request a 3rd/4th floor south facing room

My boyfriend and I stayed at this hotel from 19th Feb to the 4th March 2012. It was our first holiday together on our own so we enjoyed the experience anyway but the hotel we stayed in made the experience alot more enjoyable. We arrived at the hotel at about 7.30pm and the check in was very very quick, probably not even 2 minutes! We got our key went up to our room (we requested a 3rd floor pool view room with a double bed) which was what we got, and it was easy enough to find. We were pleasantly surprised to find that we had a seperate living area with sofa, coffee table and tv etc, which was all lovely and clean. The bedroom was lovely and the cleaners had made swans out of our towels and placed on our bed which was nice (during the few weeks we stayed there they often did pretty things like this with the bed sheets). The bathroom was nice, that's the only thing that we felt was a little dated, but everything was still immaculate and exeeded our expectations. After we unpacked we went straight down for dinner, there were no ques and plenty of tables to choose from. You help yourself to soft drinks, wine and beer. They have to pots of soup to choose from I didnt have any but my boyfriend did and said they we ok. The main dinner was lovely so much to choose from, I dont understand how anyone can put bad reviews about it but then again you always get some people finding things to moan about. There was plenty of salad and bread etc only thing I didnt go much on was the bread was a bit hard. Dessert was lovely lots of choice of cakes, some angel delight kinda dishes, ice cream and sorbet. We even had steak a couple of times which was fab! Breakfast was lovely too, pretty much what you would get in England, eggs, bacon, sausages, beans, tomato etc. and also pancakes and pastries. And lunch was pretty much the same as dinner just not as much choice (understandably it is only lunch). The hotel itself was lovely and clean..well...immaculate. The bar is pristine it was lovely and shiny! the only thing was when we walked in there for the first time (bearing in mind I'm 20 (well i turned 20 when we were there!) and my boyfriend is 29) it was mainly all old people and we were the youngest there! which was fine - we didnt want a clubby holiday - but - we dont think they really catered for younger people very well and that was the only let down was the entertainment. The pool area was lovely, we didnt go in the pool though as it was a little cold but the weather was still really hot. The beaches were lovely and clean and it's a lovely walk up along the promenade. We often walked to the benalmedena marina which was a lovely walk and a lovely area, its only about a half an hours walk from the hotel. Also the German paddy bar just across the road is absoulutly fab we went in there quite a few times Andy and Cristina are lovely lovely people and I would deffinately reccomend their Irish burger and chips! So if your thinking of going here for your holiday we would 100% reccomend it, apart from if you want to go clubbing everynight!

Room Tip: rooms with a pool view are great although sometimes you can hear everyone downstairs on the balcony!

Myself and my fiancee stayed at this hotel from 14th- 21st feb 2012 and we had a fabulous relaxing week. We decided to stay here for a week for my 40th birthday and wasnt dissapointed. Having read some of the previous reviews on here i was slightly apprehensive but please dont let them put you off as we found them to be totally wrong.
The hotel is situated out of the town centre but within easy walking distance or the train station is a 10 minute walk away and the bus stop is directly outside.
Having landed at Malaga and us being the only couple going to Torremolinos they laid on a taxi transfer for us- result, but transfer is only 10 minutes anyway.
Checkin was really easy, reception staff are really helpful, and the room overlooking the pool and bowling green was lovely, nice and spacious, nice large bathroom and plenty of wardrobe space.
Pool area was always kept really clean and so was the room and rest of the hotel, previous reviews that say the hotel is dirty are totally misguided. Bar staff are exceptional and friendly especially Domingo who always remembered your drink and made sure you had a refill before asking for one.
The restaurant was always really clean with help youself drinks if you are all inclusive which i think saves time of queing at a bar. The food was not english, you are in Spain, it was lovely always plenty of choice, with 2 soups, fish and meat dishes, lots of salads and desserts and ice cream, you will not go hungry.
The only downside to this hotel is the entertainment, its rubbish and practically non existant but if you are happy making your own entertainment you will be fine, the only other thing is children, there is not alot for them there, they is a kids club but it was shut when we were there, 1 slide and the pool isnt very big which could probably be a problem in the summer months when the hotel is busy.
But all in all we had a fab time and would quite happily return on our own or with our kids, it was a good relaxing value for money holiday.

Just returned from a 5 night stay in the Riu Belplaya. We had a great holiday. We did the all inclusive option as we thought it would be better value for money. After travelling to the Riu Puerto Marina in Benalmadena the past few years i kept comparing the 2 hotels. The Belplaya is a great hotel, the food was nice, hotel staff very friendly, good entertainment/activity program throughout the day and night. However the location wasn't the best, i would say it's a good 30min walk to the centre of Torremolinos which to be honest was a bit of a dump, nothing really nice about that place, it was abit run down - but you can get the bus along to other resorts. The location of the hotel itself is a nice area, on the front and quiet, The bars and restaurants along the promenade were good but quite expensive, we found ourselves paying about 40euros for a lunch for the 2 of us & 7.50 for a vodka & coke in the Mana bar on the front, what a rip off!!.
We walked to Benalmadena right along the promenade, this took about 1 hour 45 mins but was a nice walk. In Benalmadena i would say there is alot more choice for bars and restaurants and we found it alot cheaper, we were paying 12euros for a jug (litre) of sangria in torremolinos vs 6euros in the marina in Benalmadena.

Overall great hotel, i would return for a relaxing hotel based holiday if it came up on a good deal, but if returning to the Costa Del Sol for a hotel where i would like to get out and about and have bars, shops & restaurants, i would prefer to return to the Riu Puerto Marina, although only half board.
