La Rabida Monastery
Ranked #2 of 59 things to do in Huelva
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed June 27, 2017

We just managed to grab half an hour here before it closed at 1pm. Summer hours are 10-1 (10.45 Sundays) and 4-7, closed on Mondays. Entrance price 3€. Leaflet in English describing the rooms (contact me if you would like one).
30 minutes did not do this historical place justice, so plan your journey times.

Lots of places in Spain claim a connection with Columbus.,,,usually by allegedly having some of his bones! Columbus actually stayed here and planned his voyages to "India" with the monks while awaiting funding from Ferdinand and Isabella. The tours are excellent with clear descriptions of the various historic events that took place. They also have models of his ships, which were frail and tiny by today's standards. Well worth seeing.

Lovely site, the ground leading up to the monastery were well kept and perfect for a little picnic. There is a little restaurant on site and separate toilets. It was 2 euros per person to gain admittance to the monastery and well worth it for a couple of hours looking through this historical site. Lots of organised groups there when we visited so it could get a little congested at times but plenty of parking. there is a botanical gardens nearby also

We visited the monastery in May and it was crowded with tourist buses. It is well worth the stop if you are near Huelva, Spain. For a small fee you can hear the tour in English with a hand held recorder. There are many paintings of Columbus and replicas of the Nina,Pinta and Santa Maria. Very interesting story of how Columbus got money to sail, how the monastery helped him and maps of his journeys.

Colombus spend some time here to prepare his first trip to the Americas, and this convent is now dedicated to this period - worth the visit!
