This place was the best hotel we stayed at during our time on the Canary Islands, the staff was always welcoming and super helpful, giving advice on what restaurants to eat at. I would highly recommend getting the breakfast!

As with most things in life these days what we are given in information via the internet, or firms providing services via advertising, generally appears to reflect the better aspects of this or that and very carefully manages to avoid mentioning the pitfalls or disadvantages, deliberately or otherwise, it varies depending on the honesty and integrity of the owners. Such is no different with the Hotel San Telmo in Santa Cruz. However, at the outset, it must be said the owners of this hotel were found to be very honest, extremely helpful and went out of their way to make one's stay as pleasant as possible.

Our room was as requested, balcony with a sea view, it was very unfortunate that a large building on the immediate south side of our room blocked any views south. There was no air-conditioning in the room and any relief from the heat and humidity could only be addressed by opening the sliding doors leading onto the balcony, some nights even required leaving open the room door to get a through draft. All this of course was aggravated by the presence of 'Mosy's flying all over the place at night looking for a good feed on human blood. A net was provided over the bed but somewhat awkward to raise up and down during the night for regular visits to the loo. The trick was to get to the loo and close the door behind you before actually switching the toilet light on, failure to obey this tactic resulted in many more mosy's appearing !

There was no fridge in the room although an honesty bar had been provided at the bottom of the stairwell at ground level. This facility didn't really function well if one wanted a cold drink during the night, we did ask for some ice one day but all we got was a small dish the contents of which soon evaporated.

Probably our biggest gripe was due to the hotel location in relation to street life. Walking between the hotel and street life involved descending 40 degree tarmac slopes and a formidable series of steps that had goings and risers designed for giants, not ordinary humans. The descent back to the hotel, as could be imagined, was ten times worse. Access and egress to the hotel became a nightmare for us, bearing in mind we were there for 7 nights, If we had known this particular issue beforehand, we would certainly have stayed somewhere else, this hotel is for the physically fit. We didn't take breakfast at the hotel, preferring to obtain a cooked meal elsewhere.

As I say, all the staff were very friendly and we particularly fell in love with the two resident cats who seemed to be enjoying an idyllic life. But always remember to do your research before committing to a venue or location, 'imagined' can be far removed from the ' real' and practical world, take nothing for granted.

Room Tip: Driving and parking in a hire car is only for the very brave or foolish at this location.

The Hotel San Telmo was exactly what I had hoped: clean, peaceful and welcoming with a gentle atmosphere. You can walk everywhere in Santa Cruz from the hotel, including the beach. The hotel owners are very kind and very helpful to make sure that you have a wonderful stay in Santa Cruz. The back garden is beautiful, full of tropical plants, and you can have a lovely candlelight evening drink looking out over the ocean from the patio. We're very glad we stayed there and recommend it highly.

We loved this hotel. We undertook a week long walking holiday around the island and started and finished from Hotel San Telmo, and couldn’t have had a nicer welcome and stay both times. Initially upstairs in room 6, and on our return downstairs in the lovely older room of number 4 with its access to its own quirky balcony. In contrast to our other hotels (the Parador and 3 others) we just felt the kindness, vibe and warm of this hotel was priceless. The hotel cats were great fun too. Breakfast is particularity good.
And if you are looking for evening food then pop 3 doors down to the Pizzaria on the plaza and order Octopus Galacian style, fried zucchini with almonds and honey and finish off with black pig with red mojo and cheese.

We stayed for six days and loved this small hotel. Tucked away in a quiet neighbourhood. Maria looked after us so well and nothing was too much trouble. A delicious buffet breakfast with fresh fruits, cold meats, muesli, local jams and yummy bread started us off for the day. Our rooms were very clean with comfortable beds. My only gripe is that I my room (1) I was disturbed late at night by the guests in the room above me. However this did not detract from what was a delightful and memorable stay. We will be back!

Room Tip: Room 1 has French doors opening on to the patio. As this is an old part of the building there is no soundproofing from the room above.
