“Splendid evening”
Reviewed 21 April 2012

What an absolutely enjoyable and memorable evening. The decor is trendy and sober. The service is attentive, friendly and formal. When we walked in, we thought we might be out of place with two young kids (luckily we had the iPad for entertainment), but we were seated and a moment later the kids' cutlery was substituted for kid-friendly Ikea-ware. We knew then we were going to have an enjoyable evening. Enough with the banter - the food. Bordering on haute cuisine, the menu his focussed and delightful. Amongst the four adults we made a concerted effort to try everything on the menu (the restaurant offers a degustación, but everyone at the table has to be on board). The presentation is deconstructed and everything was fresh and savoury. The beef was one of the most tender cuts I've ever had - and I've had a lot of beef! Desert was also a highlight! We look forward to a return visit (perhaps without the kids!)

“Good but slightly disappointing”
Reviewed 13 April 2012

Quantities are huge (a bit too much with the meats) and menu is well put together but I couldn't help being disappointed with the resulting meal. The young owners had a great small tapas bar in another part of town and then set this place up as a new restaurant venture with the same passion. Menu is mainly classics with a few twists but for me they didn't really work, maybe because I don't think the spanish recipes benefit from the extra touches. Not sure if it's me but I don't like foie gras that is served too cold and the (huge) slice they give you here seemed to be straight from the fridge and lacks flavour because of it. Very Interesting decor and a lot of effort gone into the place, worth a go but not top of my list in Salamanca

“fancy food that doesn't quite make it”
Reviewed 4 March 2012

This restaurant could be anywhere, there is nothing Spanish about it. So if you're sick of Spanish food it could be the right place. Haute cuisine that had some tasty elements but never completely worked. Still had an enjoyable meal, service was excellent. The smoked salmon salad was nice but not much salmon. The scallop ravioli were good but overwhelmed in the fancy sauce. We each got a fish, perfectly cooked and flavorful but a bit bland. The desserts were all great including the "textura of chocolate" like a mousse but really good.

“One of the best places I have ever eaten in Spain”
Reviewed 16 October 2011

Not far from Place Mayor maybe 5 mins walk but a totally different eating experience. The quality of food, the service and the ambience are second to none. Excellent choices of food with an equally excellent wide choice of wines at a reasonable price. It's not easy to spot on the plaza and from the outside looks pretty ordinary but inside is fantastic. We had the menu degustation which at 36 euros for 5 courses and amuse bouche is fantastic value for money. Normal menu items no more expensive than round Playa Mayor but so much better value for money. We stayed in the Melia Clara and it was close by.

“Excellent experience”
Reviewed 26 February 2011

We spent two nights in Salamanca and tried El Alquimista based on the other Trip Advisor recommendations (our hotel was not aware of the restaurant). It is run by a young couple, with the husband as chef and his partner as restaurant manager. Everything was outstanding. The menu creative, the service attentive and helpful (good English translation from the manager) and the food and wine delivered a wonderful meal at a very reasonable price. Clearly a local success in quite a difficult economy and we would highly recommend.
