“Lovely hotel, great location and price”
Reviewed 20 July 2010

I recently stayed at the San Polo when visiting a friend in Salamanca. The ruins of the old church are beautifully integrated into the hotel. The outside patio is a lovely place for coffee or a drink. The room was comfortable, the bathroom was spacious and the air conditioner worked well. I had breakfast one morning and it was very reasonable for 6 euros. The buffet contained cereal, fresh fruits and juices, breads, meats and cheeses, Spanish tortilla as well as bacon and ham and eggs. The hotel is located toward the edge of town but is very close to everything.

The Old and New Cathedrals were interesting and the university and town are very impressive. The Church of St. Stephen was an interesting surprise.

I watched Spain win the World Cup while sitting in a cafe on the Plaza Mayor and that was unforgettable.

We stayed in the San Polo for 2 nights as part of a tour of the central classical cities of Spain.

It is located in quite a busy position at a major road junction but the noise level is not too bad as the windows shut most of it out and the air conditioning works well (it was 35 degrees while we were there)

The incredible weaving in of the old ruins of the church into a modern hotel is simply stunning and a credit to the architect. The former nave of the church is now a sheltered outdoor seating area with sofas and tables and is a cool place to savour a long drink after a day sightseeing on cobblestones.

Our room was comfortable if not over spacious and the relief decor was magnificent. The floor was a little lethal with wet or bare feet.
The bathroom was spacious and well equipped with a low level bath easy to access and there was room for toiletries and also there was a bidet and ample white relatively fluffy towels.

Service at the bar was rather slow - and many guests were complaining that Spanish people were being served before them regardless of order of arrival.

Breakfast was adequate - plenty of choice of hot or cold items but not a lot of room to move around the buffet area.

We didn't eat at night in the hotel but went to an Italian restaurant off the beaten track called Giannaninos (sp?)

The hotel is well located within a few minutes' walk of the Roman bridge, several exquisite churches and the magnificent cathedral.

I really could not find fault with this hotel and was very glad we stayed there. I just wished they had managed to fit in a small pool in part of the old church as Salamanca is a very hot city and I would have liked a dip in the late afternoon.
Be prepared to walk on very demanding cobblestones throughout the city and come well supplied with comfortable walking shoes!
Anyone with walking disabilities would be well advised to avoid both Salamanca & this hotel.

I stayed here for five days. It was perfect - great location (two blocks from the cathedral), lovely rooms, beautifully situated on the ruins of a 13th century church. Very reasonably priced - less than 50 euros/ night. Wi-fied, TV, restaurant and bar. I'd absolutely return.

We enjoyed our stay greatly. Welcoming was warm and check in fast.
Rooms were very clean, enough space and we had a nice view from the window to the Cathedral.

There was a good selection of tasty dishes at the breakfast buffet.
Check out again fast.

The hotel is located in the middle of all tourist attractions and several parking halls are nearby the hotel.
With the modest room prices comparing to the quality/location,I would highly recommend this for visiting Salamanca.

Stayed for two nights. Had a lovely view from window of St Esteban's Monastery which made up for lack of atmosphere in hotel.

Rooms are large and clean but have poor soundproofing. The staff make no attempt to interact with guests (at reception or elsewhere) so you don't really feel like you are staying in a hotel, more like a serviced apartment.

Location is good, about a 10 min walk from the centre of Salamanca and only a couple of minutes from some of the attractions. At €60 a night it was good value.

Very well-located hotel, on the edge of the city centre, but only a few minutes' walk from the cathedral and the Plaza Mayor. The remains of St Paul's church are incorporated into the hotel - a characterful and quirky touch. It is easily accessible by car, which is a big bonus in Salamanca. The room was spacious and well-presented, with a good view of the cathedral. In addition, it was excellent value - 50 euros per night.

We stayed for one night at the San Polo in May 2007, as part of a driving tour of Spain. The rest of Salamanca seemed to be booked for some conference, and we could only get one night at the San Polo. But the reception staff were extremely friendly (patient but encouraging with my attempts to speak Spanish) and we would have been happy to stay longer.

Whilst there is no parking available (other than pick up and drop off) it is very easy to find at the entrance of the old city just across the bridge, and so you can drop bags off and then park your car just a short walk away at a good underground public carpark.

It is an easy and short walk straight up the road to the square at the centre of Salamanca, past some of the best sights, so in our view the location was perfect. Walking home from the square at night, seeing the monuments and cathedral lit up, was a treat.

The hotel itself is very pleasant, and in European terms a very good three star property. A clean modern hotel built around the ruins of an old church, and the view out our window of the cathedral was perfect.
