“Adequate, but just!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 April 2012

First off, I'll mention I'm a HI Express Priority Club Platinum member. I've used them all over, a lot. This one seems to have set a new standard for minimalist accomodations, however.

As mentioned in other reviews, it is in a transitional neighborhood that over time should become more tourist friendly. That said, it also borders on a lovely Rambla frequented almost exclusively by Catalunyan locals that has all the cafes, restaurants, shops and bars you could ask for with virtually no tourist pressure. It is also easy walking distance to the Barceloneta beaches, and with a Metro (subway) station only a block and a half away, it's cheap and easy to get to anywhere in the city from there.

The rooms are small, the beds are hard, the sheets come untucked into an unruly mess with almost no provocation (a pet peeve, why can't hotels use fitted sheets?), and the couch, a foldaway bed, was perhaps the most uncomfortable I've ever sat upon.

The breakfast room was crowded and could use a bit of traffic flow control, but the food was good and plentiful and the staff pleasant and helpful.

For the Yanks planning to come to Barca with a rental car, don't do it! Parking at the Inn is 20 euro per night and even worse elsewhere in town, if you can find any. Use public transit while in the city. It's cheap, easy and safe.

Overall, I'm disappointed in the accomodations at this Holiday Inn Express compared with many others I've stayed in, but it is a fair value in an expensive city.

Stayed 3 nights at Easter in family room. Room clean and comfortable and more than adequate for our needs. Got free wi-fi as husband is platinum member so that was an unexpected bonus. Breakfast is free and fine - lots of choice and plenty of it so what more can you ask for! Staff were friendly and helpful. Location is very good - 5 mins from underground station and also close to restaurants in Poblu Neu area. We arrived Sunday noon and walked all the way to the sea - not far at all. The general area looks a little iffy but nothing to cause undue concern- you need to keep your wits about you wherever you are in Barcelona. Yes there's graffiti but I think the area is on the up. One thing- the hotel can be hard to spot at first as the green HIE sign is not obvious and the building looks like ( and probably was) an office block. The bar area is a bit bleak but who needs that when you've been out in he city. All in all good value especially if using your free nights as a loyalty club member. Would definitely return and recommend.

I stayed here, alone, for 3 nights at the beginning of April. I was very happy to be in a neighborhood away from the main tourist area. I don't know why one reviewer took taxis everywhere, the Metro is clean, felt safe, and was easy to navigate (IMHO). Just a few minutes on the Metro and you are right where you want to be at the tourist areas.

Hotel was standard HIE, street noise not too bad. Breakfast decent, very crowded. Good TV and wifi.

I personally had no trouble with pickpockets at all. I found Barcelona easy to navigate, even though there wasn't a lot of English spoken. The city sports many signs pointing tourists to what they want to see.

Stayed here 3 nights over easter weekend.Staff very friendly and accomodating, rooms were typical h/inn express, nothing to shout about, clean and modern,.....bed wasnt to comfortable and the shower pressure was terrible, other than that it was ok.
Hotel is "out of the way" of the main drag which is fine, good transport links to the city, yellow line "Llacuna" metro station 5 minutes walk away, also there is the tram about 10 mins walk away, just turn left out of the hotel and walk all the way down llacuna street,u cant miss it!There is also a "glorious" shopping centre near the tram stop,it has a starbucks where we went each morning for our dose of caffine!!!!!,staff were friendly and understood english no problem. Also when u arrive at barcelona airport, get the train into the city, its cheap and fast, purchase a T-10 ticket which u can use on all the metro, trams and trains to/from airport, a bargain at 9.85 Euros.
Overall we had a great time in Barca,.......one note of caution,be aware of pickpockets, keep your wallet/purse close to hand,be sensible and you will have no problems.

We stay at the hotel for 4 nights. We arrived on the day of the national strike so we were glad that we weren't in the middle of town. The hotel was modern and clean. The room was small and pretty bared. Bring your own shampoo/conditioner because all they had was shower gel for everything. Breakfast was ok and the same menu for 4 mornings we were there. We stayed there because we were IHG member. We did not know until the third day that as a gold member we supposed to get free wi fi - our children paid for the first 2 days. This hotel is good for business travelers or for overnight stay.

We have recently returned from a 4 day trip to Barcelona with our young son. The hotel was clean and comfortable. The location was perfect for us - just a fifteen minute walk to the beach & park area, with a small selection of shops and restaurants close by.
Whilst in Barcelona, our son was taken ill and admitted to hospital. The hotel staff were very helpful - ordering us taxis, providing hot drinks and a late breakfast (after a night spent in the hospital), and allowing us to keep our room for longer on the day of our departure. We really appreciated the friendly, helpful staff - and really hope to return to the Holiday Inn Express, Barcelona in the near future.

We stayed here for almost a week in October 2011 and absolutely fell in love with the hotel the people and the area. The next time we go back we will stay there again. It is not in the middle of all of the insanity of tourists which for me is a huge plus. We found the room quite comfortable, the breakfast very generous and tasty and as always good staff -extremely kind helpful and multilingual. The bed was comfortable and the room was well equipped. The shower was good and although the view was so so the sunrise out our window every morning was excellent.

Accessible to beach, hop on hop off bus, neighborhood restaurants, bakeries, vegetable stands, butcher shops, grocery store, specialty shops, large mall, unique cozy restaurants, parks and local ambience.
Now details of the area. It is in an area near the University and also catering to business and located in a charming neighborhood. Every day was a new experience. We went to one of the restaurants and liked the food and when we went back two days later the waiter welcomed us back and remembered even what we drank. Each day the local residents came out and walked to the local stores for groceries sat on the park benches and visited, walked their dogs, waited at the end of the day to pick up children from school, stopped for a drink at the outdoor cafes and often came back out when the streetlights went on for dinner.
The grocery store was the source of our munchies for the duration of our stay - what a fun experience - also found great good tasting cheap wine there and I am picky!!!!
Each day we walked several blocks and picked up an on off bus to explore the touristy areas of Barcelona. At the end of the day we walked home and discovered a new restaurant or little neighborhood bar. We were not far from the Bullet and the tram. We did walked to Gaudi but it was a bit of a hikealthough we enjoyed the adventure. We went to the beach each day on our walks - probably about 5-6 blocks and there were extensive parks there also.
When we went to Barcelona the first time - I did not really care for Barcelona at all - too many tourists and too much traffic. By the time we left, I was falling in love with the neighborhood in which this hotel is located and still not liking Barcelona so much. The return this past fall changed all of that. Now I like it all!!!
I travel independently with my DH and find larger cities far more enjoyable when I can experience the local culture which to me is in essence what a travel is all about. I hope that this might help you.
Just a bit of a heads up - do not be put off by the local graffiti nearby - I spent a great deal of time trying to capture the essence of the work. Very sophisticated.
Just writing this has made me long to return and linger there among these wonderful people again

Room Tip: I liked the rooms facing the sunrise but it is also above the entrance so might not please you if yo...
