“Interesting surprises around each corner”
Reviewed 6 April 2012

For those you like to stroll and let the streets surprise you rather than plan out your trips down to the minute, I recommending allocating a half-day or more to just walk the streets of the Gothic Quarter randomly. Let each block and turn you make surprise you with cafes, museums, history (roman ruins), Churches, shops, and potentially more risque things as well depending upon where/when you go. It was extremely safe and clean when I walked alone, although it was day-time when there were other walking around. Keep a map handy as the streets are not always in a grid pattern, so you can make a quick escape to a Metro stop or main street if needed. If you start at Placa Catalunya, it is all downhill through the quarter down to the water front where you can walk parallel to catch a subway ride back up to the Placa, hotels, etc.

A fantastic place to amble around Barcelona, including walking into and around neighbouring El Born neighbourhood as well.

“History, hot chocolate and tapas!”
Reviewed 5 April 2012

The shops, cafes and the streets have all been reborn! This was our 2nd visit after 20 years. The area used to be dirty and scary now it is full of chic shops and botique hotels and a lot of charm. It breathes history and culture.

“The essence of Europe”
Reviewed 5 April 2012

An American, I went on a long journey through Europe, with Barcelona as my unexpected first stop. I loved the city, and walking through the gothic quarter was really just intoxicating; that feeling of being somewhere so exotic and different than where you are from. There were many tourists in the area, so it's not lonely and you don't feel too out of place, also there is a nice market, and plenty of great architecture. The old cathedral was being repaired and partly hidden by scaffolding, but its beauty still seeped through. This place is simply magical!

“So cosy to have diner”
Reviewed 5 April 2012

Plenty of cosy restaurants. One of my favorite neighbourhoods in Barcelona because of the small streets and authentic atmosphere.
