“Great location.”
Reviewed 29 April 2012

My husband and I stayed here on a recent trip to Barcelona, its ideally located, just off La Ramblas, its clean, very reasonable and has everything you'd need for a city break. The courtyard rooms are a must as it can get very noisy at night.

Located just off the Ramblas, this hotel has a perfect location for visitors to Barcelona. You easily reach the main attractions, the beaches and has the wonderful Placa Reial next door. This hotel is gay-friendly, but most of the visitors seems to be straight. it has recently been refurbished and is not at all expensive. The staff is just wonderful and it is very clean. Among certain negative things is that you do not have a minibar in the rooms and that you can not purchase cold beverages. It is quite noisy during weekends, so you had better be someone who likes to come home late at night! Poor breakfast (included in the price): no vegetables, no fruits for instance.

Room Tip: Rooms on the courtyard are less noisy. You can choose a good room already when you book the room wel...

This hotel is a great value for money in Barcelona. Some people might call it 3 stars, but it lacks certain amenities that would bring it up a star such as a restaurant, in-room safe, clock and dresser drawers, fridge in the room, good heating, for example.

The rooms are small but completely sufficient and very very clean though a bit cold even though we had the heat turned up as high as possible, it never really got warm, and it wasn't very cold outside. The floors are not carpeted (which helps keep it feeling clean because carpets can get really disgusting really fast) but they were cold, more than the air - the tiles just never warmed up so you had to wear socks.

The breakfast is included, which is a great savings, though it would be nice if they changed it up a bit from day to day. We were there for 8 nights and by day 4 I was wishing for at least a different type of muffin or maybe some fruit. The breakfast consists of muesli, corn flakes, glazed croissant, 2 types of sweet muffins, 3 types of bread, sliced ham, sliced cheese, jams, honey, orange & pineapple fruit drink (not real juice), hot and cold milk, coffee, tea and powdered chocolate. It was enough food to not have to eat again until the afternoon. Many people brought in their own fruit which is a good idea.

Two of the three staff at the desk were very helpful and nice. The third was quite brusk and obviously annoyed when we wanted to put our stuff in and out of the safe (since there is none in the room).

While it is on a side street, the streets are always so busy it felt safe walking there, and was nice to be a bit off the main street.

We requested a room that faced the back, and it was very, very quiet, facing an enclosed courtyard with other apartments facing. The windows shut very nicely and kept out most sounds from outside. However we were near the elevator so we could always hear people in the hallway (especially some very rambunctious children running and running and running and jumping and running for seeming hours on end) and when they were in the bathroom in the room next door we could hear loudly all the faucets and clanking. All in all it was not bad noise, but not quiet like a tomb either.

I would recommend this hotel instantly to anybody who is ok without having a very fancy place to stay, a good price in a great location right in the heart of the Gotica section and just a couple blocks from the Licea metro station.

I stayed at this hotel for three nights. The location is great, right off Las Ramblas, the hotel is clean and the front desk people are very helpful. Only two negative comments, the breakfast that comes with your stay is not very good at all and the pieces of the ceiling fell into our bathtub.

Don't be put off by the 2 star status of this hotel, I have stayed in worse 4 star ones. The location of the hotel is excellent, just off las ramblas and close to all the transport connections. The rooms are clean and more than adequate, although the choice of decor might not be to everyone's taste. The bathrooms are clean and in many ways a higher standard than the rooms. The staff are excellent, efficient, friendly and they create a very welcoming atmosphere. The breakfast is fairly basic but very nice. Because of the central location there is a lot of noise outside, often into the early hours. To avoid this ask for a room on the higher floors or a internal "courtyard" room. All in all a very good hotel for the money.

Room Tip: Higher floors or internal rooms to avoid the noise outside

I have stayed at the Hotel California for many years. Last year I stayed for 2 nights before a transatlantic cruise from BCN. The new renovations are very nice the rooms are still very clean and the addition of the elevator is great! I will be back in BCN in April and will also be staying at the Hotel California. Can't beat the price! And the location is fantastic as well.
