Neighbourhood: Barrio Gòtico (Barri Gòtic)
Description: La Colmena is one of the oldest cake shops in Barcelona. For more than a century it has delighted "Placa de l'Angel" square, where it is located, with it's fragrant aroma of home-made candies and cakes. The exact date it was founded is unknown, but we do know that its original name was "Ca l'Abella". In 1849 Rosendo Abella had the shop in the street "Bajada de la carcel" (the prison slope) now called "Baixada de la Llibreteria" (Bookshop slope), situated just in front of the current location. In 1872, the Costa family purchased the business, moved to the current location and changed the name to La Colmena. But maintained both names at the front of the building. Later, the shop changed owners from "Morato i Sant Pera" in 1912 to "Chocolates J. Camps" in 1921. Finally, in 1927, Josep and Francesc Roig Manubens bought the business which is now run by the grandson, Josep Maria Roig. Toni Roig, Francesc's great-grandson and Josep Maria's son, makes the candies following the same recipes and methods centuries ago, like many other traditional Catalan pastries and cakes

Old and traditional pastry shop with a beautiful interior. Love the quality of the pastry. There I could find "xuixos de crema", a traditional desert from Girona.

Used to love macaroons from this place. They used to make one of the best macaroons in the city. Went yesterday to get some macaroons and almost broke my teeth giving a bite. It seemed like thery were there for weeks. Got different flavours and all of them were the same, really unfresh. Unexpected experience! Got really disappointed with the place.

I'm sorry about your dissapointment. We are studing the problem because it is true that this day the macaroons were dry, we think maybe they are overcooked.

This is a cute pastry shop filled with local treats. I love the pine nut studded cookies- crispy and chewy with just the right amount of sweetness. The perfect accompaniment to a cup of coffee.

I found biscotti (cantuccini) at window display, it is supposed to come with cute designed tin but the tin is sold with other kinds of biscuits in,, they said "No biscotti". What a pity ! I bought other tins instead that come with chocolate or cookies respectively. Every tin has very lovely design. Very difficult to choose only 1 or 2.
It woule be very nice to buy some as gift.
You can find very similar canned cookies/chocolates at airport (Brand is Amatller) but price-wise, De La Colmena might be slightly cheaper.

Staff behind the counter doesn't speak English unfortunately but they try to explain somehow :)

Amazingly, they were open on New Year ! Credit Card is accepted.
