We payed $100 for shared bathroom since it was only available during our stay then $110 a night for our own bathroom when it opened up. First of all, it is a little too far to walk to from the airport bus stop if you have luggage. If you take a cab from Plaza Catalonia it is 20 Euros plus luggage surcharge. Once you get there, it is a pain to get up the narrow stairs to the 3rd maybe 4th floor. Most of the staff maybe except for Ana and the guy who works the late afternoon/pre graveyard shift aren't very personable or friendly or helpful. They really seem to be hating their jobs, and are there just to clock in/for the paycheck. We saw 3 incidents where the staff were in disagreements with guests. The shard bathrooms are OK; for the most part clean but we did walk in a few times when it wasn't so or missing paper. We stayed 4 nights total. The room is tiny; smaller than a college dorm room. It looks a little more spacious in the pics so be prepared. You get a locked cubby to lock your stuff. Again it is basic. Best thing about the place is that it has lots of light and is fairy clean. Also once you are unpacked and start exploring, it is centrally located. I don't think I will be coming back and don't recommend. Been there, and it wasn't as expected, a let down. Room becomes non-refundable a few weeks before scheduled, so keep that in mind. I had no option of trying a different hotel.

Know this answer is quite long, but we'd really like you (and anybody reading here) to read everything cause we're afraid you really got a wrong idea of our place and we'd really like to mend it.

First of all, we'd like to clarify that you weren't paying so much per night, we even tried to exchange euro to dollar and it shows an average price of 85$ per night (which is arround 73€). That is definitely a fare price for two people during high season (even if it seems like October should be already mid season, the last week of September there's the major party in the city -La Mercè- and the 12th October is the Spanish National Festivity).
You originally placed two bookings for 3 nights in total.
Our policies are not that restrictive. According to your rateplan you could cancel your booking for free up to 14 days before the arrival, and after that the penalty was only the amount for the first night of your stay.
After checking in you decided to book directly with us an extra night for the next fortnight since you were coming back to Barcelona. You chose to book a room with the private bathroom, for which you paid 100$ (2 people).
We can be more flexible when the bookings are placed directly with us, so we would have canceled this booking for free if requested, but you never asked for cancellation.
I really don't understad why you decided to come back if you hated the place so much.
You even used the locker room service to store your luggage during one week, for free.

The "aerobus" stop is about 10 minutes away from our place, walking distance. We send instructions by mail with the confirmation template to reach easily and fast our place from the main transports.
The taxis can enter until the door, but being the old town (where most of the streets are narrow and crowded) they usually don't want to come here. Unfortunatelly there's nothing we can do about that. We usually recommend to ask for a dropoff in plaça Sant Jaume, a main spot just 2 minutes away.

Our guesthouse is humble and small, so are the rooms. But we don't fool anyone, the pictures shown in the website are not edited and in every room description we detail the square meters among with other bunch of informations.
Also, it's detailed and highlighted that the building doesn't have elevator and we're located on the third floor. We know the stairs can be challenging, but there's nothing we can do except informing to avoid unpleasant surprises.

We take a lot of care with little details and cleanliness is one of our musts. The staff is constantly cleaning the public facilities but, obviously, you could have found some of the toilets/showers dirty or the toilet paper stuck (it happens usually) if you entered right after somebody else used it. All we can say is that we're sorry about it.

Concerning the staff attitude, we gotta confess that we really love our job and we try to make every single guests comfy and welcomed. Don't know what you saw, or you think you saw, but we rarely have issues with our clients and, most of the time, we even get to know them well (people stops by to talk with the reception staff, we meet in the kitchen and share coffee, etc).
Maybe you saw the night shift guy "scolding" somebody for being loud at night, but we need to be very emphatic in this point since calmness and sleep is one of our commitments. Another possible explanation is maybe you saw a staff member stressed trying to sort out some issue, but even if there's some kind of problem we don't show it to the clients.
We're sorry if you got a wrong idea of the staff, it really hurts us.

Overall, we're really sorry that you had such a bad experience in our place because our commitment is to provide our guests a nice and peaceful stay so they'd enjoy our beautiful city.
We really hope you'd visit Barcelona again afterall.

We stayed here for 1 night as we were watching Barcelona in the champions league and was already paying for a hotel in Calella so was looking for some where cheap but clean and central. It is quite hard to find and we had to use the directions on the IPhone but what a lovely place we found. It is in a beautiful building in the gothic area near the cathedral (which was stunning). The pension had character and we had a lovely view of the court yard. Rooms are basic but clean. Bathroom is very modern and my partner said it was fine but there is also a sink in the room. Staff were very helpful too. Just be prepared for a lot of steps - we expected this so was no surprise but after a few drinks it was a bit of a challenge (although we didn't turn the light on which the receptionist told us so this was our fault!) There are lots of lovely bars, eating places and shops nearby which are not expensive (unlike las ramblas) and the pension exceeded our expectations for £70! I would stay here again for a night or two. The hotel also let us change our booking date after the cancelation deadline for a small fee which was really appreciated - Thank you!

Room Tip: Ask for the double with the courtyard view

We know the stairs can be challenging, you got to save a little bit of energy for the end of the day...
It was a great match that day, so you might be our lucky charm!

My friend and I stayed here for 3 nights and enjoyed it. We arrived at Barcelona airport and took the A1 bus to the city centre. We had to carry all our heavy luggage from Plaça de Catalunya to Pension Mari-Luz and then up the 3 flights of stairs due to no elevator. It was quite a tiring stretch walking there initially for 15 minutes but this paid off as the location was lovely in the heart of Barrio Gótico. This was close to La Rambla and other great attractions in the city.

We were greeted by friendly staff who spoke good English. He gave us a map and suggested things to see and do in Barcelona. There were also useful flyers and brochures readily available for tourists to take.

We had a twin bedroom which was neat and tidy. It was a basic bedroom but it met all our needs. It had a little balcony just big enough for one person to look out into and enjoy the view below. The room also had a tiny sink which was useful too.

We had to use communal showers and toilets which were regularly cleaned. They looked modern and seemed recently renovated. The only downside was the shower head was broken in the main bathroom and didn't spray water out properly.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay in Pension Mari-Luz.

Thank you very much for your feedback! We know the stairs are our biggest handicap and the spaces are reduced, that's why we set competitive prices. Thank you for letting us know about the shower head, we didn't realized it. We'll fix it right away. Hope you'll come back soon!

I have just returned from a 3 night stay on Barcelona and I cannot recommend Pension Mariluz enough. It is basic in terms of accommodation but Barcelona is the type of city where you will be out and about all day anyway. The staff were super friendly and helpful - going the extra mile. Everything was so clean and tidy. It's positioning in the city was perfect- surrounded by lots of lovely bars, shops, cafes and restaurants. I would definitely stay there again.

First of all, as many people have mentioned there are a lot of stairs and that's the first thing you're gonna notice about your stay here. That said, we were fully aware of this before booking. We went with our baby and a pushchair and the stairs did become a chore, especially when the lights turn off after a few minutes unless you reactivate them.

Overall though, our room was clean and the staff maintain the place well, cleaning the rooms and bathrooms daily. Our towels were also changed every 2 days. The bathrooms and toilets are communal and during our stay a few disrespectful guests would leave lights on, leave dirty towels on the floor and not clean up after leaving hairs in the shower or bottles of shampoo. That's not the fault of the staff here but it is worth mentioning that you will be sharing these facilities. The rooms come with aircon which was great for us after a hot day of walking around Barcelona.

This pension is in an ideal location in the heart of the Gothic quarter, just a short walk away from La Cathedral and La Rambla. You'll find plenty of places to eat within a 5 minute walk and a large corner shop just a few meters away from the room.

The pension even did a basket of clothes washing for us for 7 euro (although they don't normally do this) we were staying for 6 days and had a bunch of baby clothes to wash.

Dear Brad,
Thank you for your comments.
As we explained you, you can leave the baby stroller downstairs so you don't have to bring it up and down everytime. However, we are not responsible for any items left outside the hostel premises (which are just the flat 2º1ª), that's why we recommend to bring up the strollers at night and store them in the reception.
The lights on the stairs have a timer (it's something common to avoid irresponsable use of electricity) and it's true that sometimes it turns off in the worst moment, but it happens to all of us, believe me!
Concerning to the shared facilities, we really do try to maintain them clean. Not only the cleaning maid, the receptionists clean the facilities at least once during every shift and keep mopping the floors and removing trash constantly. However, depending on how many people are using the bathrooms at the same time, if some of those people don't respect the advices on the doors and leave everything messed up and considering that the receptionists might have some other work to do, sometimes you'd find the bathrooms dirty, of course. During your next visit you can ask for a room with private bathroom.
We really hope to see you soon! Regards,

The location of this place is great! We were walking distance to La Rambla and so many great food and shopping locations. The metro was also so close it made getting around the city easy breezy.

There were a lot of stairs to climb and no elevator, so at the end of a long day of walking, it wasn't my favourite thing to climb them, but it wasn't terrible. The room itself was very cozy, the only annoying thing was the room was located right by the main check in area and the guy who worked at night often had sports games on, and the TV kept me up a little bit. I imagine the other rooms are quieter, and not everyone would be bothered by that.

There was also a little kitchen area where you could get filtered water and put some groceries in the fridge, which was very nice.

Dear Krista,
Thank you so much for leaving your feedback! We're really glad that you enjoyed your stay with us.
It's true that the first room (next to the reception) isn't specially quiet because of the front door but you shouldn't have any disturbance from the receptionist. We'll talk with the night staff right away to solve this problem.
Thanks a lot for your understanding. Please, conctact us for your next visit to Barcelona.
