Alberto, a receptionist at the Axel, transformed our stay into one of magic. Each and everyday he greeted us with an energy and charisma matching that of the city. He was not only helpful but genuinely cared that we had an amazing experience in Madrid! I am officially committed to staying at other Axel locations during my future travels, because the hotel is wonderful but the staff is what sets it apart from all others!

Stayed here with partner and two friends. Checked in early for no fee and was swift. Hotel room looked on to the inner courtyard. Bed was super comfortable and you had lots of extras in the room - bathrobe, slippers, toiletries etc - and a pay minibar and snacks.

Steam room was cosy but quiet, the roof had amazing views, a nice cold pool and lots of seating. Bar staff were lovely, and drinks reasonably priced. I had a €25 massage for 30 minutes which was delightful. The bar and massage could be charged to the room for ease too.

Fully recommend a stay here.

Recently spent 5 nights at the Axel Hotel in Madrid. Overall it was a fine stay but definitely not the best.

The Axel hotel in Madrid describes itself as being “Herero-Friendly” which is absolutely true from the (assumed predominantly gay staff) and random amenities (free condoms in the room).

The front desk staff were incredibly friendly and were able to provide great recommendations to any questions we asked them. So definitely a big thumbs up to the entire team working the front desk.

The pool and pool bar is open to the public which means it is consistently busy and filled with attractive men in small bathing suits. Which is great until it becomes difficult to find a place to sit or a space in their fairly small wading pool. The spa staff are incredibly friendly and will provide you with options of massages they can provide and are NOT pushy at all to try to convince you to get a massage, which is always appreciated. The pool bar staff were fine, but not overly friendly. It was less like a hotel bar where they would treat you like a valued guest and more like another patron ordering a drink at any bar you could go to off the street. (Definitely came off as the least approachable employees within the staff.)

The room itself looks brand new and gorgeously decorated but was small and the bed was hard as a rock. If you’re looking for a large dresser to store your clothes, keep looking. There was a small dresser with two small drawers. The bathroom, sink, and shower (which has tendency to leak into the room while showering)are all incorporated into the room and have almost see through glass as well as a sheer curtain that you can maneuver around the room to provide a very, very small amount of separation. I’ve been in small European hotels before that have much more ideal ways of incorporating bathrooms that doesn’t leave you exposed to anyone else staying in the room with you.

The room comes with a small mini-bar at a cost. Just be careful when you’re in the room, to keep the do not disturb sign on your door. If it isn’t up and they want to check what you’ve used or haven’t used in the mini-bar they will let themselves in and check it out. (Even if you’re laying in bed or tell them you haven’t used anything).

Location wise it’s conveniently located to a lot of what Madrid has to offer! It’s about a 20-25 minute walk to gay area (Chueca) of Madrid so if you’re planning a truly gay vacation you may want a hotel closer.

Overall for the price of the stay I would moderately recommend this hotel to friends but would also advise them to potentially seek out other options as well.

We were looking for a chic and central place to celebrate my best friend‘s birthday and we found a stunning hotel with super nice staff! Everything was very clean, the roof top bar and pool were busy but not too crowded, and the other guests respectful and quiet. I was able to order a flower bouquet at the reception for the birthday, and all our requests were handled with great care - thank you David! I would definitely book again! And happy first Birthday, Axel Madrid!

This hotel experience a perfect location, in walking distance to most key Maris attractions.

The room itself was amazing - it was lovely & clean with a modern & sexy vibe and literally had almost every room freebie you could think of!

The rooftop bar was quite expensive for drinks but the bar food was extremely reasonable & was made to order on the rooftop bbq which was a nice touch. We had a burger & hot dog which were very yummy! The pool was very small however (the website photos are very very deceiving!) but I suppose a rooftop pool in Madrid is a massive bonus no matter the size! There wasn’t much chance of getting a sun lounger either when the sun is out & peak time in the afternoon which was a bit of a pain. The downside of our trip was me falling down the poolside stairs... the hotel really really does need to invest in getting some form of grip on the poolside stairs as I took an awful tumble (with terrible bruises & aches to prove it!) At the time I was too embarrassed & in shock to really think about it all but looking back I should have asked for the manager as no accident report was completed and there was very little acknowledgment that I had even fell - only a barman asking if I was ok. However only 5 minutes after I had fallen, did another person experience the same thing! So this just proves the need to sort out poolside stairs due to being a hazard when wet.

We learnt that the Axel hotel chain is a chain of gay hotels. This was not a problem in the slightest for me & my husband however I think due to the nature of the hotel, it’s key location & rooftop facilities, it became extremely busy in the afternoon through to the evening. Great for the party vibe, not so great if you want to find a sun lounger & chill!

Overall (apart from my fall - which, granted could have been a lot worse!) the views from the rooftop of the hotel was amazing. The hotel has a range of amenities & was great value.
