The Gran Melia is an old historical hotel that is very luxurious. While the decor is not modern, the room was spacious and comfortable. The service from everyone we encountered was plesant, helpful and above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed. The highlight of the hotel was the bar DRY - a fun atmosphere with great cocktails and staff. Location was nice - clean and in the more upscale part of town (near great shopping!)...a little bit away from the main sights and nightlife. Not a budget hotel, but for service alone well worth the price.

If you are going to Madrid and you are not in a budget Melia Fenix is an excellent option for bussiness, couple and even family travel.

The cost of a double room for me was 200 euro, breakfast included.

The hotel is not that new but is really nice, the rooms are big enough and the service is excellent. The location is ideal, close to everything important in Madrid. 15 minutes walk to sol. 2 minutes walk to a metro stop, 10 minutes walk to " Parque el Retiro".

The rooms are quiet which is importan if you want to rest after a transatlantic flight. The only downside with the room may be the bathroom which is a little bit small.

One of the highest point is the breakfast with a great variety of options to start your day, from ham and eggs to excellent bread and even " Jamón Serrano".

The internet in the room is wireless and you can get a key from the lobby. Actually the connection is really fast.

There is Hardrock Café next door and some many spots around to eat and to shop.

If you want a nice Madrid experience the Melia Fenix is an option.

Room Tip: Pay atention to the lights system so you can understand how to control them from one place.

Loved this hotel. Staff were great. Room was amazing. Amenities were great. The only possibly negative thing if any at all is the location. It is still right in the city but a bit of walking is required to get to shops and restaurants (great if u like to walk)
Would definitely love to go back again if we go back to Madrid!

The hotel was very good, in a great location, so it's possible to walk to many city attractions like Museo del Prado, Chuenca, Plaza Sant'Anna, Retiro etc. It's very close to Calle Serrano, where are located many famous stores, like El Corte Ingles, Prada, Lowe, etc. Turning the block there's a Le Pain Quotidien, where we took breakfast every day for a good price. The room is silent (they have double windows), quiet, comfortable, well decorated and very clean. I like it very much. The only thing I observed is that the common areas are needing a small renovation, specially the walls and doors need to be painted.

We recently spent three nights at the Gran Melia Fenix and realized it was a luxurious hotel the minute we walked into the domed lobby. It only got better from their. Our room, while small, was comfortable and beautifully decorated. Both the bedroom and bathroom were separated from the entry by glass doors, unnecessary, but a nice touch. The glass door between the two parts of the bathroom was a bit impractical, considering the size and configuration of the bathroom and the placement of the door. (We learned from subsequent stays at three more Melia hotels that a redundancy of bathroom doors is a recurring theme.) We knew that we had arrived when we discovered that turndown service included not only a chocolate on our pillows but a towel and slippers on the floor on each side of the bed.

The room was clean and the staff were friendly. Breakfast was extensive and everything was delicious. The location is good--about a 10-15 minute walk to the Prado--and public transportation is easily accessible. We would definitely return to this hotel the next time we are in Madrid.

We stayed at this hotel at the recommendation of our travel agent. It is a quality hotel with very high-end furnishings. The rooms were very spacious for an older hotel in a European city. The location of the hotel was perfect -- near wonderful shopping and within a short walk to museums. The hotel's gym was under construction so we had access to a great gym in a near-by mall. We upgraded to the Red Level which was worth every penny (euro). The Red Level lounge provided daily breakfasts and an open bar with wonderful tapas/desserts and high-end liquor and wines from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. I would definately recommend this hotel to other travelers. The only downside - which was typical of Spain - was very few people spoke English. However, they knew enough to help us find our way around.

Room Tip: Ask for an upgrade to a delux room and pay for the upgrade to the Red Level.
